Buddhists give alms to monks nationwide on Thai NY day

Bangkok: Thai Buddhists Monday celebrated their traditional New Year Day or Songkran Day by giving alms to monks in the morning before joining the water splashing fun during the day.


For example, in Bangkok, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra led government officials, private firms’ representatives and the people to give alms to 189 monks at Sanam Luang.


In Phitsanulok, the provincial administration held a ceremony to give dried foods to 199 Buddhist novices at the Wat Phra Sri Ratana Mahathat. The novices are students who were ordained at the Phra Buddha Shinnarat College during the summer school break.


In Nong Bua Lamphu, Governor Amnuay Tungcharoenchai and the Mueng Nong Bua Lamphu Municipality held a rite at Wat Mahachai to give alms to over 500 monks from 22 temples in the province.


A lot of people in the province were dressed in traditional costumes to give alms.


In Sakon Nakhon, Governor Boonsong Techamanee led officials, local people and tourists to give alms to monks at the Somdej Phra Sirnakarinda Park at 7:30 am.


As part of the New Year celebration, the Sakon Nakhon governor led the people to release 500,000 fishes into the Nong Harn lake, which is the second largest fresh water lake in Thailand.


In Nakhon Ratchasima, Governor Thongchai Lua-adul led officials and the people to give alms to 61 monks and pour water on a Buddha image at the Thao Suranaree Monument.


In Buri Ram, Governor Seree Sihatrai and former Parliament president Chai Chidchob led government officials and people to give alms to 109 monks at a canal in front of the Mueng Buri Ram Municipality.
