Light does not travel faster than sound in Thailand. Apparently.

Recommended Posts

Was on my condo’s balcony with a Thai university graduate.

There was a large thunderstorm.

I said that you can roughly tell the distance of the lightning strike by counting the time between seeing the strike and hearing the thunder.

Because light travels faster than sound. You see the lightning first, and then because sound travels slower, you hear the thunder. You can count between them to estimate the distance of where the lightning struck.

No this was wrong, I was told.

I proffered that it wasn’t, and that it really is a scientific fact.

No, it isn’t, I was told. Light not travel faster than sound.

Okay, I was a bit silent at this, and not really sure where to go in the conversation, when she happily took control of it.

First you hear the plane, then see it.

Erm... what?

First you hear the plane in the sky.... then you look up and you see it.

First you hear, then you see.

Long silence.

Thank you for teaching me.

Welcome, ka.

Had a Thai girl swear that the big round object that was visible in the sky in the afternoon wasn't the moon because everyone knows that the moon is only present at night.

When asked what she thought it was, she said that she didn't know, but, it definitely wasn't the moon.

Well, so, now you know... reality and Thainess.

This reminds me... just last week...

Teaching English Grammar (Present Perfect) to a 20 year old 2nd-Year Accounting Major...

Drew a diagram on the board (simple diagram showing the Time Line... and Present Perfect... so a box on the time line showing time in the past, until now.)

I said, and drew and wrote this next stuff ALL on the board...

"Ok the year now is 2015, right?" "Right."

"So George came to Thailand in 1983, ok?" "Ok."

"So... How many years has George been in Thailand?"

............................................long pause.....................................

"13 years?"

"No, just from the year 2000 to the year 2015 is 15 years.... Think it through..."

(and I repeated the situation and asked again...)

..........................................another long pause.........................

"I don't know."

"Really??? Ok, let's do the math...2015 minus 1983." (drew the math problem up on the board)

"What's the answer?"

........................................ another long pause.........................

"I don't know."

"Ok, well, 5 minus 3 is 2, and 11 minus 8 is 3, so the answer is 32 years."

(I couldn't help myself....asked her...) You're a 2nd year ACCOUNTING MAJOR???

I showed her the quick way to mentally figure the number of years from 2000 to 2015 (15, natch)

... and the number of years from 1983 to 2000 (17, natch)

...and showed her she could just add 15 and 17, to get the answer, 32...

I asked her where did she want to work? "Toyota"

"Why Toyota?" "Someone told me that's a nice place to work."

{thank God I drive a Nissan...}

Oh idiocy is certainly not unique to Thailand............. most places have a special way with it!

Why there is even a standard here w00t.gif

Sitting down with loans officer as i want a loan for a big bike.

The bike i wanted is made by Taiwanese Company

He tells me, bank not lend money for foreign bikes, ONLY for Thai brand.

I was puzzled, so i asked what was the Thai brand and with a big green on his face, i was told Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki are ALL Thai brands.

I did try to explain, all of the above were Japanese, but were manufactured in Thailand,

However was interrupted and advised otherwise, Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki are Thai brands, facepalm.gif

If you or anyone out there believes they can solve equations like this, I've got plenty of unsolved equations here I can send in order for you to prove it.

Not saying no one can, but I doubt I will be flooded with requests.
