Texas' top officer: Snoop Dogg a 'dope smoking cop hater'
PAUL J. WEBER, Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas' chief law enforcement official called Snoop Dogg a "dope smoking cop hater" before reprimanding a state trooper who posed for a picture with the rapper, according to emails made public Wednesday.

Snoop Dogg posted a photo to Instagram with Department of Public Safety Trooper Billy Spears in March with the comment "Me n my deputy dogg." It was taken during the South by Southwest music festival, where Spears was working off-duty as extra security.

Spears is now suing DPS after being disciplined for taking a picture with a public figure who has several convictions for drug possession.

Emails obtained by Spears' attorney through open records laws show that the incident went all the way to DPS Director Steve McCraw, who is best known for overseeing the state's expansive border security operations.

"Apparently he would rather work the convention while on a week's vacation to earn additional money rather than take an additional tour on the border," McCraw wrote. "He must not understand that he was being lampooned by a dope smoking cop hater which reflects very poorly on the department."

DPS spokesman Tom Vinger confirmed the authenticity of the email but did not comment on its content. He referred to the agency previously saying that DPS holds employees to high standards of conduct and judgment.

The emails include a DPS supervisor explaining that Spears and other troopers have routinely taken pictures with other celebrities at SXSW. He mentions actor Robert Duvall, former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal and musicians Cee Lo Green and Rob Zombie.

Spears is seeking unspecified damages in a Travis County court. He claims his discipline was retaliation for filing a complaint several weeks earlier against a superior.

And another story today , they want to Legalise Pot...Very Interesting

As usual, the guys at the top of the pyramid in these organizations are dickheads.

The trooper should have been reprimanded for poor taste in music. Nothing wrong with dope-smoking and cop-hating.

In a country where there is great animosity between aa's and the cops, and currently even more tension,

you'd think a bit of a public relations photo op would be a good thing.

I would have done the same if I was the cop. Snoop Dog is funny.

The guy was on his own time, not representing the police, or the state. They need to drop this and get a life.

Maybe he shouldn't have worn his uniform then.

They should legalize pot.

As an old Texas tourism advert said, "Texas... it's like a whole nuther country."

Was wondering about that myself. It's not unusual for police officers to provide event security on their off time, but I've always understood that in most jurisdictions, they could not be in official uniform.

Was that 'a whole nuther country,' or a whole 'nutter' country!!

Internet policing goes beyond the pale...such trivial pursuit...a waste of time on a lame charge...

White police officer - black civilian... and the only shots were those taken with a camera.

Unusual these days.

Have been to USA.

Spent a whole 2 weeks in California and about the same in Florida.

I may be wrong. Probably I still am wrong. But my overall feeling and impression after the visit was:

There is about 45 M of guys like this Snoop Dogg. Well dressed, heavy gold chained, obviously financially secure...

yet being at least a tenth generation Americans

they speak a kind of lingo which is not English or American English and they hate USA.

What I mean is - their facial expression. Have a look again:

Well, I didn't mean to say all of them. But clearly a majority.

The shocking point for me as an outsider was the fact that these people despite 300 years history where behaving, speaking and looking foreign.

And color has nothing to do with the feeling. I was and still am talking about facial expression which clearly reflects the emotions.

Some posters here find this funny. I do not.

Some posters here find nothing wrong with dope. I do.

Some posters here find cop hate natural. I do not.

At the same time some posters find shootings of criminals by cops a 'black' issue or a 'blue' issue. I do not.

Especially having seen lots and lots of black cops in both states I visited.
