Now in Europe, can't believe how much cheaper everything in supermarkets is, for example, beer 15 baht a bottle!

You are so right , and the beer is much beter and has more alcohol in it.

And we're not even talking about real food , cheese , milk , potatoes , pizza , mayonaise , some vegetables, real bread, chocolate ,.... all cheaper than thailand. 7/11 does not even compare to Aldi or Lidl's.

Unfortunately, this is the 21st century and the modern 7-11s, Family Marts and supermarkets will always beat the ugly mom and pop stores. It's business.

While I personally would prefer to support small businesses, let's be frank, would you buy from these small and unclean non air conditioned provision shops or would you prefer the nice, bright and cool 7-11s?

Yes, I would. I don't like CP products..t think they are rubbish and avoid them as much as possible

I hated the idea of 7-11 when I moved here.

Then I noticed that 7-11 hired all types of people. Skin color or religion wasn't an issue.

Prices are clearly marked etc.

I know that maybe some of their prices are a little more than the big superstores but I still use 7/11 on a daily basis specially since the block across Sukumvit Road which adds at least another 5k to get to BigC on Pattaya Klang. I would rather pay a few baht more to a store that is 100m from my home. As for who they hire I really don't care so long as I get good service which I have always had at 7/11

The "ugly mom and pop stores"? Most of the 7-11 stores I see in Thailand have very dirty and trashy outside areas (steps, porch, etc.). Given how much money they make you'd assume they'd keep their shops neat and clean and take some pride in their stores. Guess not.

Why would you care about the look of 7-11 stores? -- they don't sell organic kale.

7/11 is a tailor made solution for this and many other countries who have little structure in their lives and live on a day to day portfolio.

They are convenient they are extensive but they are far from cheap.

CP -7/11 is a most lucrative racket that purports to serve the communities that it exploits.

More 7/11's in Thailand than in the whole of the USA.Thailand population +-65 million USA population 450 million +-.

Why do Thais need so many shops?

USA needs shops that accepts food-stamps..................................coffee1.gif

Thailand lacks organized consumers, labor unions and the majority of the people is kept poor and stupid.

Therefore the door is wide open for companies like CP and a few more to rule out competition and exploit the country.

CP owns the whole chain from animal food to the processed meat in the shop that they also own. It's outrageous that simple processed pork meat products are sold at up to twice the price that the same products cost in Europe.

Thailand was never colonized by a foreign country, they are still colonized and exploited by their own elite!

Chantaburi province was 'colonized' by the French from 1900-1910, which is why if you go there you will see some rather nice colonial buildings, rather than the usual concrete eyesores redolent of every Thai city and town.

It's not as simple as 7-11 which now has far more bright and clean Family Marts to compete with and even CP Makro may not be the wholesaler of choice forever.

CP stands accused of contributing to the serious pollution and particulate haze in the North of Thailand where they have encouraged land burn off forest land for corn production. This has threatened the lives of thousands of Thai People and Foreigners alike.

If People feel strongly about issues they should engage in collective action to make these big companies feel the heat and listen. While mass demonstrations are not allowed at the moment, boycotts are and it takes just a few days to yield results from concerted action now that social networks are a way of life.

When I first came here I used to try avoiding the big corporations like Tesco, 7-11, Big C etc. and try to support small local 'mom and pop' type businesses.

Until the small local businesses started trying to rip me off and overcharge me for their goods. Never been ripped off at 7-11, air conditioned, always well stocked, prices marked, normally fairly polite service from staff.

Never been ripped off at 7/11? You must have missed a few threads on TV

I wonder how only one province in a country can be colonized.

Its a powerful protest if people boycott certain companies or products but for a lot of people they cant be bothered. I am semi bothered and personally wont eat Mcdonalds anymore as there have been so many reports that show they buy rotten meats unfit even dog food, apply chemicals processes to it to recreate as an edible food like product like their burgers. They only have 19 ingredients in their french fries! Theres no respect for their customers with those practices. Avoid, boycott.

Boots the chemist does lots of trading in the UK but when it comes to paying tax they say they are based in Switzerland not the UK even though you stood at the check-out , paid , bought you stuff in the UK. For them your transaction happened in Switzerland. The tax that Boots avoids gets paid by joe average PAYE worker. I dont use Boots anymore.

Starbucks UK argues it has never made any profit in the UK ever so they never pay tax ever. Strange thing is even though they never make a penny of profit they have opened new stores year in year out. They have 500 stores? More maybe. Most firms cut back or remove themselves from the market when they cant make a profit. Starbucks opens more stores to increase the losses! Its all bogus. The tax they dont pay gets dumped on joe average worker who is not allowed to avoid his or her taxes. Many people though think its stupid to boycott Starbucks even when they have pick up the tax shortfall in their paychecks. They dont get it. They love Starbucks.

its for these same reasons i boycott these shops .but they get away with it because there allowed to

They pay the tax that the tax rules require of them. Seems wrong to me but international tax agreements approved by governments led to this situation. Can't really blame the companies involved for following the law. l only pay the amount of tax the law requires and expect you do too. Why pay more?

Agree 100%. I wonder if people boycott Apple/Google etc who also use similar schemes?

Also Starbucks did at least agree to make some sort of gesture in paying tax to HMRC for the last two years and apparently have even just made a small profit for the first time - http://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/feb/04/starbucks-first-uk-profits

Let me fix that for you.

"I am semi bothered and personally wont eat Mcdonalds anymore as there have been so many reports rumors that show they buy rotten meats unfit even dog food, apply chemicals processes to it to recreate as an edible food like product like their burgers."

Exactly right. Rumors started by Chipotle and Burger King that the 'King of Burgers' is dead. Ha, ha.

This is not a socialist state and we can eat as we like. Sure, develop a boycott if you wish. Folks everywhere are highly driven by cost, quality and value. And that is why 7/11 and MCD thrive.

Just because you are not aware of the facts it does not make them rumours. Jamie Oliver was the last person I heard have court case with Mcd re rotten meat. There was a big thing in China last year with dodgy chicken meat. McDonalds don't respect their customers health full stop.

McDonald's are thriving is what you wrote. Wrong! Anyone who only semi skims the business news is aware Mcd's business is contracting quarter after quarter. Mcd's management are literally shitting mcnuggets right now. The world is slowly rejecting Mcd's food like products and its gaining momentum. Do a bit of googling and get up to speed with your rumour fact confusion.

Just fall off the turnip truck boys?

Chingmai331 I forgot to mention the 19 ingredients in the McDonald's French fries. Thats from an official Mcd's video reassuring customers that 19 ingredients is nothing to worry about. Give it a google. I am only semi bothered but I know enough real facts about McDonalds to not eat there anymore.

Oh and there are many more for you to read up on.

Must be the dumbest links that dont pertain to a story ever, if your dumb enough to not check change ya deserve what ya get, and to make out it only happens at 7/11's is even dumber, and if ya worried about the .50 bit buy 2.

And as for the melon who said without unions oh please they have done such a great good in a lot of countrys driving up prices thats why half of us are here.

Typically I go out of my way (not real far) to go to a mom and pop shop. My dislike for huge corporations grows daily. I also appreciate mom a pop shops because I like like to drink beer anytime I wish.

Well said Sir!

The licensing hours here are are ridiculous. They do nothing to curb excess drinking by the Thais. They only inconvenience normal.people who would have an alcoholic drink in the afternoon or after midnight. Way too much Thainess for me! Wish we could swap out all the 7-11's for privately owned stores.

Take a deep breath, and let it out slowly. You are now blaming 7-11 for Thailand having alcohol selling times, and they are certainly not responsible for it. By the way, here in Pattaya, you can walk into any 7-11, at any time of day, and buy alcohol. They ignore the selling hours in this tourist city. The law is aimed at Thai's.
The one near me has all the signs on the fridges about the hours. They don't concern me as I work which includes those hours. I will try this weekend and see, I'll bet a pound to a pinch of shire horse dung that they don't refuse.

However the lady in the Mom and Pop across the road, and offers free wifi and fresh cold beer (she always seems to be popping off on her motorbike returning with a case or two) is an absolute gem and there are no hour restrictions. It is a market bar so opens very early and shuts at about 20.30.

Many Thais equate CP with quality but many farangs like myself are suspicious of CP and a bit wary. I was in a local Tesco this afternoon and came across a whole bank of CP ready meals in a freezer. They were more expensive than a freshly made meal in a local restaurant and no doubt much worse. They must be the most miserable meals in Thailand but with their marketing and adverts some people will believe there getting something good, worth the extra money.

That's something I also always have scratched my head about when I see those overpriced ready meals in the freezer section at Big C.

How do they get them sold in a country where there are restaurants 24/7 on every corner of the street and between who prepare the same meal for you while you wait at a lower price.

No, the law is aimed at underage drinking. That is why they started the stupid thing. Cant recall what year it started i think 2003-4.

They had problems with school kids drinking so they did the typical knee jerk reaction and passed the law. Has nothing to do with controlling the average Thai from drinking.

I use both 7-11 and mom & pop shops depends on what I'm buying and whatever is more convenient at the time.

I must admit after a while I like the majority live and learn.I too like the 7-11 for the prices of several things, and the layout and easy conveinence of all.why go to runchok rimping to somewhere that targets the farang, dont even have the bottle to display the prices, but make a big effort to display a number that looks ok,which turns out to be a the code for that item.Over the years I have realised there is a great difference in my spending, since using the likes of 7-11.I am not a skinflint but i believe in fair play. There is nothing in the likes of Rimping that is worth overspending just because its in a brown bag, believe me i know what im talking about.Ok everyone is entitled to thier own opinion,id rather give some beggar in the market a few bob than give to the likes of stores that perform like Rimping,Parasites are every where,In chiangmai they are known as RIMPING.
