Phuket police on lookout for foreign 'deaf' scammer

PHUKET: -- Immigration police are on the lookout for a foreign man who poses as a deaf person and solicits for donations in the Thalang area. This comes after photos of the card the man uses to solicit the donations started to spread on social media last Thursday (May 7).

Supreme Court rejects appeal by female teenager in fatal van fall from the expressway

BANGKOK: -- The Supreme Court today rejected an appeal by a female teenager who was earlier sentenced to two years in prison for reckless driving that caused nine people dead when a taxi van fell from the expressway after it was rammed by her car almost five years ago.

THB7,900 million injected to drive 2016 cultural policy

BANGKOK, 11 May 2015 (NNT) – The Culture Ministry has been allocated a budget of THB7,900 million in Fiscal 2016, an increase of around THB900 million from last year, to drive five main strategic plans.


Minister of Culture Weera Rotephotchanarat said the strategy was meant to utilize the country’s cultural capital to create income for communities and finally bring economic stability to the country.

The 2016 strategic plans comprise firstly, the promotion of Thailand’s roles in the ASEAN Community, secondly the development of southern border provinces, followed by increasing incomes in the tourism and service sectors, devising anti-corruption plans in the government sector and lastly preserving, promoting and developing religions, art and cultures.

Minister Weera said the information and communication technology and work integration between the public and private sectors would be boosted in implementing those strategies, to ensure that every project was conducted with transparency.

Thai-Vietnamese agreement on import of labour scheduled to finish in July

BANGKOK, 11 May 2015 (NNT) - A draft agreement between Thailand and Vietnam on import of Vietnamese workforce into Thailand is expected to be finished in July, Permanent Secretary for Labour Nakorn Silpa-archa said.


As chairman of the working group on the agreement drafting, Mr Nakorn elaborated that the ministry is expediting the agreement which needs to be submitted to the Foreign Ministry for scrutiny before being forwarded to the Vietnamese Government. If approved, it will be returned to the Thai Cabinet for endorsement.

Under the agreement, Thai employers are allowed to import Vietnamese labor only after no Thai workers have shown interest in applying for the announced positions.

Mr. Nakorn said jobs that usually attract Vietnamese labor are in the construction and fishery sectors.

More than 50 Phayao kindergarten pupils rushed to hospital

PHAYAO: -- More than 50 pupils of the Phayao Kindergarten in Phayao's Mueang district were rushed to the provincial hospital at 3:45 pm after they suffered from foods poisoning.

Teachers said the students had diarrhoea and vomited about two hours after they had lunch the school. About 30 of them were admitted for intravenous feeds.

Two policemen injured in ambush by insurgents in Pattani

PATTANI: -- Two policemen were ambushed and slightly injured by insurgents on a road in Pattani's Yarang district at 1:30 pm.

Pol Senior Sgt Maj Buaraheng Hayuama and Pol Lance Corporal Nidil Fitri were sent to the Yarang Hospital and forwarded to the provincial hospital. They were returning from the Pattani police head office to their Yarang police station, travelling in a pickup truck.
