It's war for civilisation: Bush

We'll strike again, says al-Qaeda, as 2749 names are read

President Bush will urge Americans to set aside their differences to win the war on terrorism, as he marks the fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

"The war is not over," Bush said in advance excerpts of his speech to the nation on Monday night. "Winning this war will require the determined efforts of a unified country. So we must put aside our differences and work together to meet that test history has given us. We will defeat our enemies."

On the heroism of Americans, Bush said that "on 9/11, our nation saw the face of evil. Yet on that awful day, we also witnessed something distinctly American: ordinary citizens rising to the occasion, and responding with extraordinary acts of courage."

Bush's speech also highlighted the ongoing terrorist threat.

"We face an enemy determined to bring death and suffering into our homes. America did not ask for this war, and every American wishes it were over. So do I. But the war is not over, and it will not be over until either we or the extremists emerge victorious. If we do not defeat these enemies now, we will leave our children to face a Middle East overrun by terrorist states and radical dictators armed with nuclear weapons. We are in a war that will set the course for this new century and determine the destiny of millions across the world."

"This struggle has been called a clash of civilisations. In truth, it is a struggle for civilisation. We are fighting to maintain the way of life enjoyed by free nations. And we are fighting for the possibility that good and decent people across the Middle East can raise up societies based on freedom, and tolerance, and personal dignity."

"Our nation has endured trials, and we face a difficult road ahead. Winning this war will require the determined efforts of a unified country. So we must put aside our differences, and work together to meet the test that history has given us. We will defeat our enemies, we will protect our people, and we will lead the 21st century into a shining age of human liberty."

Amid continued conflict between Lebanon and Israel and with casualties continuing to mount in Iraq, Bush maintained his call for democratic reform in the Middle East.

"By standing with democratic leaders and reformers, by giving voice to the hopes of decent men and women, we are offering a path away from radicalism. And we are enlisting the most powerful force for peace and moderation in the Middle East: The desire of millions to be free."

Same story... different decade. Why do thinking people put up with this mindless propaganda? :D:D:o

I guess that "mindless propoganda" is in the eye of the beholder.

I would venture that anyone who disagrees with the above statement is simply mindless. :o

UselesslyG ..... can you imagine the legit propoganda of the myriad places around the world ........

18 people on planes killed 3,000 .... and instead of dealing with the guilty people .... we now have 30,000 new innocent deaths of people that did nothing ....

There have been many, many acts of terrorism in the world during the last 40 years other than 9/11. Should they just be allowed to continue?

Arthur Neville Chamberlain and others of your ilk would simply ignore them, but many of us would like to see them stopped. :o

You kinda missed the point above ... <OK ... I know you didn't MISS it ... you just know that you can't deal with the repurcusions of actions that WE take that kill so many civilians ... in places we have no business being :o >

I don't know any way to deal with terrorism that is guaranteed to work and either does George W. Bush.

It is just like every problem that mankind has had since the beginning of time. You do your best to to solve the problem in the most sensible way you can, and if you are wrong, you just have to try something else and learn from your experience.

The world is not a perfect place and there are no guarantees. :o

Thomas Edison when working on creating the electric light bulb tried many thousand materials. When asked about his failure rate he replied;

"I have not failed, just discovered several thousand things that don't work"

Bush and his coalition of the willing have also found several thousand things that did not work. If they were in modern corporate or sporting life they would have to answer some tough questions some time ago.

Nobody ever said that fighting an ill-defined enemy of religious fanatics who use guerrilla warfare and terrorist techniques with lots of followers, millions of dollars, advanced weapons, global reach and with no mercy would be easy. :o

Think GWB said it correctly - it is a war against western civilization as we know it. Islamic facism vs the world. Which side would you rather be on? I think the choice is obvious. :o

Dubya also said right from the get-go that it would be a long war.

Well, boys & girls - that it is. The Cold War lasted decades and most intelligent analysts predict that the War on Terror will last just as long if not longer.

So don't get your colllective panties in a wad, huh? :o

Right. And Edison didn`t have to kill many many innocents of any faith to make his goal reality.

And right, if it was modern corporate world, he`d probably have been fired and replaced. But then, spending millions on a light buld sounds to me more ethical than bombing every gathering of arabs from weddings to births and funerals.

I hope it gets over and done with, becasue, yeah, it is NOT a conventional war.

Bush is playing battleships, but the holes in the board are all over the world.

It is not a turn based game.

I blame The Emporer Ming :D:D

The guilty people are dead.

They`ve been dead since the victims died.

Nobody else is guilty.

And yes, there may have been other planners.

But then, there are people who manufacture guns. Are they held accountable every time there is a gunshot death?

No. So extreme double standard that has caused more death and terror, and the good guys have caused it.

For, despite all my america bashing, I do feel they are the good guys, but I don`t have a clue as to why they are trying to fight this.

Their foreign affairs have caused the rise of most of these terrorist bastards. A few, well planned special strike forces, I could deal with, even support, but actions performed by the US War planners since sept 11 not only has caused more death and destruction, terror and fear.

AND NOt only uprooted all the muslim population of ALL OUR nations in a geographical or mental sense, but disrupted the lives of each and every single one of to a large or lesser degree.

Since the sad day, its just PR. It has been, actually for a long time.

And it`s sad that the people are buying it.

Very sad.

A weeping thumbs up smilie at ya Boon... sad but true.

Well, while you lot have been hard at it debating Aussie cricket, the Pope is in a bit of poop:

Fanning the flames … Pakistani Muslims burn an effigy of Pope Benedict in Karachi at the weekend.

FACING a Muslim backlash, the Pope said yesterday that he was "deeply sorry" for the anger caused by his remarks on Islam and said a quote he used from a medieval text about holy wars did not reflect his personal thoughts.

Now this IS funny! :D:D:D:o

I think it would have been an opportune moment for the pope to use his middle finger. :o

In the first place, it may as well be al-Jazeera which offices are located at Fifth Avenue at 83rd Street, Manhattan. At every turn in the war against Islamofascism, the Sulzberger/Keller gang have taken a firm stand against the United States, and stood with the terrorists. This latest Times idiocy has everything to do with the left's war against Bush and Christianity, and nothing of a concern for the feelings of this orchestrated Muslim rabble.

Second, and to the question at hand, Muhammad's tone and tenor changed dramatically after Medina, so the Koran offers something for everybody, with today's Islamo fascists opting for the latter era proclamations, which are basically, if they won't convert, kill them. For $14.76 you can learn stuff. Or Google "Sword Verses." The substance of the Pope's quote is entirely accurate, a claim the Times has precious little justification in making of itself. :o

clintonland.jpg

Sinister right wing forces have tried to rewrite the proud history of the Clinton Administration, most recently in the controversial docudrama The Path to 9/11.

Now, to assist patriotic Americans in remembering the 90s in a manner officially approved by the former president himself, the board game division of the Rose Law Firm presents “Clinton Land: The Path to 9/11.”

The Pope said that? :D Did you do some creative censorship, BoonMee????? :o

nah khall, somebody else said that in reaction to the Pope`s speech.

Ie: "The Pope said that we are prone to anger?! I get so upset I could kill someone!"

:o Quite funny actually.

Not really that funny when you consider the nun shot in the back by a muslim in Somalia.
