Cabinet approves billions of baht to improve railway crossings and road expansion

BANGKOK, 3 June 2015 (NNT) - The cabinet has set aside budgets in the next two fiscal years for several transport projects and also another THB2.1 billion in this fiscal year for the improvement of below-standard railway crossings at 775 points nationwide, Deputy Government Spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said.

As an immediate measure to control accidents at poor-standard railway crossing points, the cabinet agreed to put up flashing traffic signs at all crossing points within Sep 2015. Then in 2016, red flashing lights will be installed 300 meters ahead of the crossing points.

Besides, the cabinet instructed the State Railway of Thailand and the Department of Highway to allocate their budgets in the 2016-2017 fiscal years for the development of railway crossing standard in 47 provinces nationwide, covering 4,000 km. in length.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, who chaired the meeting, was cited as saying that all railway construction projects that Thailand has committed with China and Japan remain the same without changing hand from China to Japan. The PM supported the planned construction of Phuket Provincial Prison, saying it was not necessary that the auction price must be lower than the median price, but the procedure must be done with transparency.

The cabinet also approved as proposed by the Transport Ministry the expansion to four traffic lanes of the bypass of Mae Sot City in Tak Province which can be linked with Myanmar.

I wonder where they pulled the 300 meters before the crossing as a location for warning lights, seems a bit arbitrary, and curious what study they based this decision on.

And a new prison supported and yet nothing has been done to end the never ending incoming tide of incarcerations and overcrowding that goes with that. The country has in the future serious issues with manpower and yet is debilitating large numbers of people that need better opportunities and the skills to take advantage of them. Something the education system for children should of taken care of for the most part, but young adults and not so young can be rescued by another go with focused training. Money better spent than locking them up and destroying their health and assisting the criminal networks by providing a training camp full of recruits.

then all they have to do is stop all the thais that build their own crossing closer to their houses and get the others to actually obey the signs and not try to race the trains like they do now because they dont want to stop and wait.

Outside my condo in Bangkok, nobody pays any attention to the lights. Traffic doesn't stop until the guard goes out and pushes the wheeled barrier in front of the traffic.

Then the 'automatic' barrier comes down.

A suggestion to the good General re New Phuket prison. Sir, why not simply put a bl***y great fence around Patong. Afterall, judging from the numerous posts on TV, most of Phukets criminal elements are based there. Construct a by-pass road connecting the three access roads to the town (or is it the City?) and Somchais yer uncle, most of the problems solved. Mind you it would mean I would have to find somewhere else to meet up with my buddies for the occassional beer or two.
