Energy Min checking gas reserves in Bongkot and Erawan Fields before current exploration contracts expire

BANGKOK, 6 June 2015 (NNT) – Energy Minister Narongchai Akrasanee revealed that his Ministry is in the process of gauging the volume of natural gas reserves in Bongkot Field and Erawan Field in preparation for negotiations with new or existing contract holders to develop the fields before their contracts expire this year.

The negotiation will take place in Q4 of 2015 after the amendment of the Petroleum Act, said Narongchai.

According to him, petroleum reserves can be exhausted in the next six years if there is no clear approach to open new round pf exploration and production contracts.

Regarding a news report that the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) would directly import Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) for electricity generation, Narongchai commented that EGAT was free to do so as its effort would contribute to national energy security.
