MOPH tightens MERS-CoV surveillance

BANGKOK, 7 June 2015 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health has called on all people coming from countries with reports of MERS-CoV outbreaks to strictly follow its instructions.

Disease Control Department Director-General Sopon Mekthon said the Ministry of Public Health and related agencies have applied a 14-day surveillance system to people arriving from the Middle East and other infection-prone countries aside from distribution of self-care leaflets.

Those suffering such symptoms as cough, fever, sore throat and shortness of breath must seek a doctor immediately or call the Disease Control Department’s hotline 1422 round the clock.

Airports meanwhile have issued prevention measures for staff to deal with passengers arriving from MERS-CoV –prone countries. In Chiang Rai’s Mae Fah Luang Airport, staff members on duty are required to wear face masks at all times. Officials were told to give special attention to passengers from countries with MERS-CoV outbreaks. Those who exhibit flu-like symptoms will be sent to a hospital.

The deadly virus has so far sickened around 1,200 people around the world and claimed more than 400 lives, according to World Health Organization.
