MNRE joins World Ocean Day event in Phuket

PHUKET, 8 June 2015 (NNT) – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) joined the World Ocean Day event at Patong Beach to encourage public participation in marine and coastal conservation.

The MNRE Minister Gen Dapong Ratanasuwan joined the World Ocean Day event today, held under the theme ‘Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet’ at Patong Beach, Kratoo District, Phuket Province.

The event intends to raise public awareness and encourage participation for the conservation and allocation of natural resources in keep with the marine resources' fair usage principle.

The MNRE Minister has said that the government has prioritized on conserving marine and coastal resources by pushing Marine and Coastal Resources Management Act BE 2558 to be effective by June 2015, to provide a legal protection framework for marine and coastal resources. Public participation will also be a key factor in maximizing the conservation efforts.

Thailand is facing a deterioration of marine resources both from natural and man-made activities. Mangrove forest areas have been decreasing as well as rare marine animals such as sea turtles, dolphins, and dugong. Coral reef areas have also suffered due to the amount of garbage.
