PATTAYA: -- Two novice monks aged 12 and 15, who had changed their monk robes for civilian clothing so they could sneak out of the temple, were involved in a road crash as they rushed to return to their Temple before their Chief Abbot realized they had gone.

The crash occurred in front of the Toyota Showroom on the Bangkok-bound carriageway of the Sukhumvit Road in North Pattaya, just before 5am. The 15 year old Novice Monk sustained an open compound fracture of his Tibia Bone in his left leg and superficial cuts and bruises. The younger novice monk sustained some cuts and bruises and was also taken to Hospital as a precaution with the more seriously injured 15 year old.

The pair had borrowed clothes and a motorbike from civilian workers at the Gittapawan Temple where they were residing, and wanted to go to a convenience store and purchase food.

"Novice" Monks ?? What is the meaning of this in English ??

Doesn't the word "Novice" mean "not yet a professional" ? I think "apprentice" may actually be a better suited word.

So novice monks are allowed to drive while fully fledged monks get fined 800 baht for driving???blink.pngblink.png

No. The 2 novice monks were involved in an accident, they were not apprehended by the police.

The monk was caught by the police in the act of driving with no driving license and no car tax sticker being displayed on the vehicle.

It's that time of year when parents have their young boys put on the robes for a couple of weeks, hoping to keep them out of trouble while school is out. In this case it didn't work. coffee1.gif
