Tennasserim hills, S-Thailand/Burma border. Never seen a wild tortoise here sofar. Majestic animal. Yellow head. Rare according to local friends.

Thanks for posting that turtle. It looks like it had a few Thai adventures too.

Indeed it did (Thai or Burmese, who will tell?!) but like most (of us) it survived and only got stronger.
Head up!

It is an elongated tortoise, once common, now rare, shipped by the ton to China until nearly extinct.

...shipped by the ton to China until nearly extinct.

Dare one ask what the Chinese did with them? Opened hundreds of small zoos across the nation??

A very nice tortoise, as tortoises go...how did you manage to creep up on it without startling the bugger?

The principle threats to this species are the mass harvesting of the remaining wild populations for the large and growing food markets in China and elsewhere in East Asia. It is also incorrectly believed in China, that a mixture, made by grinding up the shell of the tortoise, serves as an aphrodisiac.

It wasn't (acting) afraid as soon as it found out I meant no harm. It stopped for a minute or two and then headed southwards....

Ya it is nice tortoise.

I have never seen tortoise in front of me.

I want to see in real.
