redandyellow Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Thanks for posting that turtle. It looks like it had a few Thai adventures too. Best
Mook23 Posted June 29, 2015 Author Posted June 29, 2015 Indeed it did (Thai or Burmese, who will tell?!) but like most (of us) it survived and only got stronger.Head up!
daoyai Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 It is an elongated tortoise, once common, now rare, shipped by the ton to China until nearly extinct.
simon43 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 ...shipped by the ton to China until nearly extinct. Dare one ask what the Chinese did with them? Opened hundreds of small zoos across the nation??

GanDoonToonPet Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 A very nice tortoise, as tortoises go...how did you manage to creep up on it without startling the bugger?
Mook23 Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 The principle threats to this species are the mass harvesting of the remaining wild populations for the large and growing food markets in China and elsewhere in East Asia. It is also incorrectly believed in China, that a mixture, made by grinding up the shell of the tortoise, serves as an aphrodisiac. (from wikipedia)
h90 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 no I would never but can't say the same for our Thai and Chinese friends...
Mook23 Posted June 30, 2015 Author Posted June 30, 2015 A very nice tortoise, as tortoises go...how did you manage to creep up on it without startling the bugger? It wasn't (acting) afraid as soon as it found out I meant no harm. It stopped for a minute or two and then headed southwards....
