Boy, 7, killed during violent July 4 celebrations in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) — Authorities say a 7-year-old boy who was celebrating the Fourth of July with his family was among three people who were shot and killed overnight in Chicago.

Police say the child, Amari Brown, was shot after someone opened fire just before midnight Saturday in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. He was pronounced dead early Sunday at Stroger Hospital.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Sunday at a news conference that the boy's father, a "ranking gang member," had been the intended target. No one was in custody Sunday.

Additionally, a 26-year-old man was fatally shot in the Albany Park neighborhood and a 26-year-old man was gunned down in the South Shore neighborhood.

Police also say two men, ages 25 and 31, were killed after dawn Sunday when somebody fired on their SUV, which sped away and crashed.

How could this happen with Chicago having some of the most strict gun laws in the U.S.

Probably because saying "the strictest gun laws in the US" really isn't saying much.

How strict are their gun laws compared to any other developed nation?

rip for the little fellow but being raised in gang family it is probably, violence in the future will be somewhat reduced by the lose of this young potential member.

if your bgoing to desiginate a shooter make sure he can hit what the target is. then again he may have hit the target, a stern warning to fathers/family out there may have been the proposed message from the start. these people think in strange ways, most nomal honest citizens canot understand and probably never will.

82 people shot and 14 killed over the 4th of July weekend last year, so this year was way safer! Must have been all the smoke giving the city a peaceful contact buzz from the 70,000 hippies in town for the final 3 Grateful Dead shows.

The kids dad was a gang leader, had been arrested 45 times and had his 7 year old out in the park at midnight knowing he was a target. The poor kid didn't get to pick his parents but dad was the problem.

Sweet home Chicago!

don't see people protesting in the streets over this, but they should, throw a white gang member in there and they will, so sad for the little boy, but destined for failure in the future

Very good point... throw a white cop in there and you'd really have a hoedown
