Irrigation Dept confirms rainy season to begin in August

BANGKOK, 15 July 2015 (NNT) – The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) has told drought-affected farmers to ready themselves for rice cultivation, as the rainy season is sure to arrive next month.

Based on weather forecasts from several agencies, RID Director-General Lertwirote Kowatana reported that the rainy season would begin in August. He explained the country has experienced an unusually long dry season this year due to the volatile climate.

Several meteorological institutes did not think the drought would last this long, given that water levels in the four main dams earlier this year were higher compared to the same period last year.

The impact of the El Nino climate was not noticeable until late May and early June, during which precipitation across all regions fell below average, prompting speculation of belated rainfall.

In response to the drought crisis, the RID adjusted its water management plan to reduce water supplies to 28 million cubic instead of 60 million cubic meters per day and request a delay in rice farming until the situation improves.

That's like the BBC News saying that winter will definitely be in December this year. Who winds these people up in the mornings? laugh.png

Can't wait for the rainy season to officially begin, love it, here in CM we have had some nice days of rain already

These pronouncements always remind me of the sign in the pub, "Free Beer Tomorrow".

And in related news, bears may be forced to make temporary toilet-arrangements in wooded-areas, and it may get dark mid-evening.facepalm.gif

In his infinite wisdom he forgot to mention that it will be too late for most farmers, rice needs at least 90 days to mature. BTW can Khun Lertwirote give me the next lucky lottery numbers!

all generals are to be believed so ''old mother nature'' will lift her skirts and start pissing down next month at/on some good luck day for the farmers and their rice paddy. with this good news water releaqse is to be cut by nearly 50% and dont plant rice until the drought is broken.

what would thailand do without these brillent press releases made by the men who have devoted their time doing controlled scientific studies looking thru the neck of a whiskey bottle to see how mch is left.they shouuld be preparing the damaged sections of the system to be prepareed to hold water where its wanted/needed instead of chasing sloppy repair and maintance on what they have.

they might want to monitor and divide water allotments up equally not according to the wealth nor land holding of their cronies. the drought will futher decrease those small land owners try to feed a family , leaving more for the favoredto divide up.

That's a relief. Perhaps they were thinking of postponing it until after the 'reforms'.

He forgot to include the exact date and the precise time the rain will start.

Did they invoke Article 44 to enforce this? Will university students protest to postpone the rainy season? Will DNA evidence supporting their announcement be lost so the rainy season can't happen?

Lovin' it!

The rainy season was postponed so as not to interfere with the Tour de France that is being held here in Thailand.

(It is being held here isn't it? They said it was going to held here - or at least part of it.)

Were 'dem 'ol boys funnin' me again?

Enough of the sarcasm please! The Thai Meteorological Department runs an excellent weather statistics and forecasting website here... http://www.tmd.go.th/en/index.php . They even have an English language page with the same data, (not with values doubled as some cycnics might expect). The satellite section with its 25 frame animated sequence is particularly useful in looking at regional weather patterns. Give the Thais some credit for a change!

Oh and rice farmers have until August 15th to plant photoperiod sensitive rice varieties. After that they can plant other varieties and still get a crop.

no it starts just after completion of the F1

I thought I saw that El Nino was going to be at it's hottest in August, which usually means drought in Thailand, and it does not cool down quickly.

I think that headline should read: Thai Irrigation Dept. really really really hopes that the rainy season will begin in August!

Their still working on the rain dance routine gigglem.gif

How quickly people forget that water was released from dams at the onset of last year's rainy season. The current situation has been compounded by that action.

Also, the low price of water in Thailand provides no incentive to conserve this precious resource. An issue further exacerbated by a focus on tourists (who, wherever they may be, have no appreciation of local water shortages).

Many a true word spoken in jest.

Not sure where it was, but last year in August I think, some place in Australia recorded it's coldest winter day for August, on record.

A week later a heatwave hit and they then recorded the hottest August day on record.

Did they say This year or maybe Next year,What Drugs are they taking,,They are of their heads.

As it has been reported that the Bangkok water supply will run out sometime in August, I am

glad to hear the Thai irrigation department has made arrangements to mitigate this problem. whistling.gif

How can any of these goons know when the rain comes.

Inadequate storage of water - clueless plans for water movement.

I have never read such crap in all my life.

Thailand: A country run by children and the children are not too bright!

Long on ideas short on money. Again they seem to have money for subs and military upgrades but none to fix crucial things like water management and storage cutting back on pollution and green energy. We can live without subs but water well not so much. Thailand is expanding rapidly population wise at a time when ole mother nature wants to go on vacation. Everything in life has a tipping point and we are close to reaching ours on the water issue.

They will have natives dancing around in a ring, yes?

Is it true that night will be quite dark or is that just a rumour?
