ToT internet - fast on videos, slow on websites - why

Featured Replies

I have a 13MB internet connection from ToT. My modem/router is connected to my desktop PC via the ethernet cable and I use the wifi connection to connect to my internet TV, which I use for watching YouTube videos.

Here is the weird thing. My Youtube videos always play OK without interruption, but my web page browsing from my PC is slower than a slow snail.

Even if I'm not watching a video on the TV, my desktop browsing is slow, even on very basic HTML sites.

Any ideas why this might be? I have done the usual rebooting equipment without improvement.

Are videos using a different port or protocol or something? Could it be a DNS problem that just affects web page browsing? (I can't see why though)

Youtube (google) has peering with all isps in Thailand thats why it is fast.

If other sites slow, perhaps there are too many international bandwidth consuming farangs live nearby?

Try a US proxy or vpn to see if it will increase your browsing speed. California or around (West coast) will give best results to TOT

Not especially my area, but could also be to do with ping speed / latency. IIRC when doing standard web browsing, each individual image, webpage, css and js file will be affected by latency individually, whereas when streaming a video, it only is an issue at the start of streaming when resolving the stream.

Exactly. What many don't realize.

Its not only Google/Youtube but also Microsoft and Facebook and maybe more who mirror their content locally (likely in Singapore).

Do a ping to google.com and you get 11 ms -> Bangkok.

Do a ping to youtube.com and you get 31 ms -> Singapore?

Do a ping to a US website (berkeley.edu) and you get 227 ms.

Many downloads and content of any kind is managed by large providers like Akamai who also mirror worldwide.

So much data that looks like coming from abroad is indeed local.

Tot is generally the slowest to singapore out of the main providers and there are a lot more sites with servers in singapore than bangkok.

Also video and webpages are very different request methods and can be subject to different throttling.

Normally videos slowed to improve web quality but maybe tot have swapped priorities (not using them anymore so dont know for sure).

Youtube could utilise multiple connections which can provide a performance boost over a web page.

Could be a dodgy plugin, malware or security plugin too that is analysing web pages but doesnt touch video. Try a different browser to see if any different.

If you have access try a vpn...they slow things down by their nature but often increase speed by bypassing throttling or improving routing.
