Pattaya reaction to the Military Coup in Bangkok.

20_09_1.jpg

At around 9pm on Tuesday Night a military coup took place in Bangkok and some hours later the entire country was placed under Martial Law. The specifics of the evening’s events were featured on news services around the world. So what was the reaction to the news here in Pattaya?

Our journalists went to Walking Street in South Pattaya to gauge the feelings of tourists who had just learnt of the news coming out of Bangkok. TV screens around the street were featuring coverage of the coup from international news organizations and it must be said that many foreigners appeared unconcerned and believed that Pattaya would not be affected.

The Tourist Police were on-hand to offer reassurances to some tourists who feared that their travel plans would be affected. As we compiled this report every airport around Thailand was operating normally and international flight departures and arrivals were mostly on schedule.

On Wednesday morning and early afternoon, the streets of Pattaya were uncharacteristically quiet as Schools, Banks and Government offices were closed and many decided it was better to remain at home or in their hotels to monitor developments.

Many Embassies’ in Bangkok are warning its citizens to exercise caution during this transitional period and avoid large gatherings on the streets. We suggest that if you have any concerns or require any further information on the Military Coup you should either check your Embassies website or call them for updated information.
