webfact
Swedish military investigating report of mini-sub wreck findHELSINKI (AP) — Sweden's military says it's investigating the discovery of a wreck of what could be a mini-submarine in its territorial waters.Swedish Armed Forces spokesman Jesper Tengroth says investigators are studying video footage of a wreck taken by divers, but that it was too early to say for sure if the find was a submarine.Tengroth said Monday that it was better "to come back with facts rather than speculation," and that there was no particular hurry "because the wreck was not going anywhere."The report comes after the Swedish military engaged in an extensive hunt for a suspected submarine late last year when the navy said it had detected an underwater intruder in Sweden's territorial waters, but the military provided no evidence of a submarine at the end of the hunt.-- (c) Associated Press 2015-07-

hawker9000
Putin & Sweden sort of getting into it. Putin has already issued threats over the possibility of Sweden joining NATO. 'Guess sovereign nations have to get Putin's permission first before exercising their sovereignty... 'Wonder what'll happen when they find Cyrillic lettering on this thing they've found. According to reports, they already did find Cyrillic letters on the mini sub. They are also assuming that the crew is still inside (presumed dead), as the hatches are closed. A Russian mini-submarine has been discovered at Swedish territorial waters not far from the Swedish coast. The submarine is about 20 meters long and three and a half meters wide. It is unclear how old the submarine is and how long it has been laying at the sea floor, but the Cyrillic letters on the hull indicates that it is Russian. The discovery was made previous week by the Ocean X Team and Ixplorer. – The submarine is completely intact, have no visible damage to the hull and the hatches are closed. Therefore do we fear that the crew have not been able to save them self when the sub went down, says Stefan Hogeborn, divers in Ocean X Team. Seastallion
OK...so was Russia's latest incursion an attempt to look for the minisub...that had possibly nefarious reasons to be there in the first place? What I mean is, that when Sweden detected a Russian sub, it was not this now sunken one, but a search and rescue sub. The minisub had already been disabled in some way. Either way, Russia looks bad. Guest
Now a retired Swedish lieutenant and submarine expert is saying that the submarine is Catfish which sunk during the WWI in year 1916. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/investigation-underway-into-wreck-of-an-unidentified-submarine-found-off-the-coast-of-sweden-10420209.htmlhttp://www.expressen.se/nyheter/frammande-ubat-hittad-i-svenskt-vatten/
BKKBobby
Russians submarines have been penetrating Swedish territorial waters for several decades. There was a Russian submarine paranoia in Sweden during the 80s with people reporting having seen submarines in the archipelago all the time. hawksway
In the circumstances Russia chose not to ask Sweden for assistance. They would prefer to allow their Crew to perish than admit the Sub's existence in Swedish Waters and risk censure in the United Nations. The Russians probably hoped this vessel would lay undiscovered for many years to come. Bad luck!
