I want to install NAS box that has 2 to 4 drive bays and will support RAID 1 and 5 on my network without lots of setup required.

If you have experience with current units available in Thailand which ones would you recommend.

I like the Western Digital My Cloud units as the GUI is just great. Mine came configured as Raid 5 out of the box but the GUI would reset that easily. It will do Raid 0,1, 5, 10, JBOD or Spanning with its own firmware.

My experience is that you need a strong CPU in this NAS - faster than say a 2 GHz single core. You'll be wishing for a faster dual or quad core if you move really big files. 512 memory seems to be enough.

Cheers.

I use the WDMyCloud units (one at work and one at home), but will not buy another.

I had to get 3bb to play with something before they properly connected to my router and if you search for files using Windows explorer it takes forever and you'll probably not find what you're looking for.

I will be looking for something that is windows based rather than Linux next time round as it is essential I can search for work stuff efficiently.

I bought a D-Link DNS-320L from InvadeIt last year. It has 2 drive bays and I installed 2 x 2TB HDD's in a Raid 1 (Mirror) config.

It was all very straightforward and as I don't need an excessive amount of storage it is perfect for my home intranet needs.

I looked at the "Red" drives but in the end I just went for the WD Caviar Green drives as I don't need fast performance as it's main use is for scheduled backups. It's been reliable so far...touch wood!

Not sure how easy to get in TH, but Synology are simply amazing boxes IMO. The OS on these is incredibly well thought out and easy to use. They also have a unique system that allows you to access your box from anywhere without the need to set up all sorts of network tweaks. Apps for phones. tablets etc work well, and they integrate with Chromecast and most modern casting standards. Probably everything you could ever want in a NAS.

I have 2 boxes - 2 bay 212 and 4 bay 414+ - and run all my downloads etc from these. Best tech buys I've made. Running red drives in both, and RAID 5 on 4-bay box.

I have one of those too. It's fine.

I used to have two drives in mirror mode as you do, but after some thought I decided it was better to just have one drive in the NAS and run an incremental backup to the other drive in a caddy once a week. That way if the NAS is damaged both drives wont suffer and also I get to see which files are scheduled for backup, which may indicate file corruption.

Saves electricity and wear and tear on the second drive also.

recently I bought a Western Digital MyCloud EX2100 2-bay NAS. so far so good, it comes with the WD RED disks; the device is not the best speed performance among others in the market, not the cheapest neither. I like the interface that is far better than any competition, the easiness of using it and of managing it, especially when I am off-site.

the EX4100 offer a 4-bay option, for more RAID configuration if you need it.

don't go for the BUSINESS version DL2100 nor DL4100, they are actually slower than the EX series.

Either buy Synology or Qnap.

Synology DS414j is promising and offers great price / performance ratio.

Nasshops sell it.

Stay away from Asustor.

I also don't recommend WD, Dlink, Zyxel and several other brands.

Synology and Qnap is like Canon and Nikon.

Thanks to all that provided info on current NAS units and where to find.

I ended buying a Synology DS214se which was suited for a novice like me and price was in my range after purchase of two 3TB WD Red NAS drives. After install of drives in NAS unit and connections to router it was ready for use in ten minutes or less with little effort on my part. Speed of unit is not the fastest but neither is my home network which the install software was so nice to point out.

All good stuff ^^^.

For the slightly more geeky (is that a word) unRAID from Lime is a good FreeBSD based NAS, make use of that old PC to build a high performance NAS with almost unlimited expansion capability. Add any size drives to the protected array any time, the only constraint is that the parity drive is the same size as the biggest storage drive. Mine is currently 10TB and nearly ready for another 2TB drive

I suggest Synology - i just recently (last week) got a D215j - dual bay NAS - The DSM software is awesome.

Please note, you won't run RAID5 with less than 3 drives :)

I also suggest Synology. I now have 3 units DS212, DS414 and a new RS815 as I am now upgrading all my equipment to rack mounted. Very easy to setup, great operating system and add on packages to control everything from multimedia to surveillance to all sorts of business networking and security stuff.

I have both a Synology DS413j (4 bay with 4tb WD reds) and a Qnap TS-859 (8 bay with 6TB WD reds).

Have had the Synology for about 3 years now and performs well although I have had 2 drives fail in that time which was a non event other than the time required to rebuild the array.

The Qnap is only a recent addition in the past few months and was purchased only because the Synology is full and and replacing the 4tb drives with 6tb ones seems to be a stop gap measure at best, Iam in the process of moving everything off the Synology to it but so far am happy with its performance.

My latest is a Drobo 5N with 5x4Tb.

It uses its own RAID, which consumes more space, but performance is superb, and all disks are hot swappable.

And it takes a small SSD in the bottom to speed up cacheing.

It's plugged into my main (802.11ac) router and I can stream everything from it including BR rips.
