Governor checks Phuket’s port in-out center

PHUKET, 7 August 2015 (NNT) – The Governor of Phuket has checked the province’s port-in port-out fishing vessels report center, which has been established to help eliminate illegal fishing.

The Governor of Phuket Nisit Jansomwong chaired the conference and operational check-up of the port-in port-out fishing vessels report center at the province’s seashore fisheries radio station in Ratsada Subdistrict.

The meeting was held to discuss problems and obstacles that each agency was facing, to create unity during the operation of the report center. The port-in port-out center has been established to eliminate the Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing (IUU) issue in a sustainable manner.

Chief of the Phuket port in - port out report center, Capt Preecha Tuntiruk, has revealed that current data indicates that the current number of registered vessels stand at 138. Figures on license extension shows that 185 vessels’ licenses were extended by the Marine Department Phuket Office and an additional 152 licenses were extended by the Phuket Provincial Fisheries Office. 280 vessels have been registered for operating in the vicinity of Phuket province. Regarding data on vessels’ sizes, 147 vessels have been categorized as the 30-60 tonnes gross class, while 133 vessels weigh over 60 tonnes gross.

He has also reported that out of 280 vessels registered for fishing in Phuket province, 48 vessels bore inaccurate licenses, and one vessel does not have a license to operate.
