I just noticed that all my photos are gone

is there a program to undelete them ?

I got a ransom ware page the other day , but since I had ESET virus search running I thought it was fake ,

I did a full scan after that and ESET found nothing

maybe it was not ?????

anyway is there a way to check where the photos and other files are ?

I just ran Recuva and it did not pick up anything that I lost , but lots of unknown files from livesnap which I have no idea where they came from , 1000s of them !

any other ideas ?

Heard of system restore ? easiest way in 7 anyways is from safe mode saves on switching off your protective programs incase they block restore settings.

What operating system do you have?

Where are they gone from? Is it a My Pictures folder, other folder, or all pictures? Are they .jpg's?

In My Computer, open the C: drive and in the search box type *.jpg and see what comes up.

System restore, restores the registry. It does nothing to your documents, and you will recover nothing that way. There are 2 types of people, those that back-up, and those that wish they had. ( For a more efficient restore, use ERUNT. )

Harsh but true wink.png

Lesson learned?

Zillions of "how to backup" websites to get informed.

Ransom ware encrypts your files and then demands a fee to decode them.

They are gone with no way to get them back.

That is why anyone with any experience with computers uses a "D" drive.

System restore won't restore the photos. They're gone. Sorry.

I posted a reply, but cant see it so apol's it it is here twice...

You havent mentioned looking in the recycle bin, have you looked there? Under Explorer or File Explore.

I use Microsoft SyncToy to sync important folders accross different PC and also copy to external HD as a precaution.

I also have my C: drive (System) on its own drive or partition and store my files on separate partitions or drives.

I never use the default Documents folders on the system drive. - Then I can refresh or rebuild my C:drive without impacting my files.

I hope you find your Photos, they are always so special...

I would first make sure your system is clean. Really clean. I would reboot while pressing F8 then choose safe start with network.

download trend microcillin Housecall and run it. After clean, enter system start and go online and download photo recovery software. they are numerous.

it may recover lots of lost impressions left on your disk even if deleted. Recently I used this successfully on a formatted drive. Pretty amazing. Good luck.

Sync is not the same as back up. If u have sync enable 24/7, when one file becomes corrupt, missing, or unreadable, the other file also becomes corrupt, missing, or unreadable.

Sorry you lost your stuff. The only thing that beat ransom ware for me was Kaspersky. Obviously to detailed to outline here but if you are inclined go there first. If you get cleaned up try pogoplug to back up your photos in the future. Very cheap for unlimited storage and saves every single photo I take automatically. Good luck

Hum, I am surprised that you got everything back. I got ransom ware a couple of years ago and lost everything. I had system backup discs but I was told they were of low quality (which they were) and was unable to use them. A lesson learned, good luck.

How would restoring the registry unencrypt files?

As I said in my previous post, it won't restore any files. ERUNT is for the registry only

Might be that there are many people that don't have that experience?...we are all different with different priorities in life.

Keeping their photos safe seems a common priority.

Almost all viruses attack the C drive and leave the other drives alone.

I thought this was common knowledge. My father, 80 this year, knows to keep his good stuff safe.

Ah - I assumed the ERUNT recommendation was related to the topic.

Do you choose to not back up?

I got the ransom ware page , but I did not know if it was real or not.....

I did not pay it and deleted the browser it was on ,

But the photo files were gone next time I needed to use one , and I assumed the ransom ware deleted them ,

So I am still not sure , ESET did not find it , so maybe I did something else ????

and yes most of it was backed up........

I back up once a day about an hour before I shut computer down for night. I do an incremental one way back up. (Only modified files are backed up. Deleted files on the C drive are not deleted on the D drive). I use HANDYBACKUP. All automatic , takes about 5 minutes

I also about every 6-8 weeks start a new complete backup, so I now have 2 backups, on the D drive. ( one with files that have been deleted long ago, the newer one more current)

Also about every 8 weeks I image my C drive ( Paragon Back Up and Restore - Free version) to an External E drive, which is only plugged in when doing an actual backup. I keep 2 images, I would keep 3, but the drive isn't big enough.

Once in a while, I sync my music files, and a couple of speadsheets to google drive. I do this bc I have many music files, and I am trying to delete those I no longer like. If I ever lose my C drive music, I can restore it without restoring unwanted songs.

My photos go to google + automatically, but I also back those up.

I store a lot of files, that I never use, but don't want to lose, on the cloud elsewhere. These are never sync'ed.

LOL. He got his files back by the 5th post here.

I agree with backups and I'm really granular. Macrium Reflect makes an image file of my 0 disk every night while I sleep using its scheduler. It makes it to a hidden wireless external (NAS if you insist) hoping that If someone steals my stuff they don't find that external. It keeps 2 images and deletes the older ones so I don't run out of space. Occasionally I rename one with BAK at the beginning of the file name and put it in another folder to have older stuff over time.

Cobian Backup also runs every night and does a backup of chosen files and folders. It is also set to delete all but the last two. Also with this I occasionally rename one with BAK at the beginning of the file name and move it into another folder.

Cheers.

I would not pay the ransom either but like I said I lost all my files and my backup disks failed. I am not sure where you are located but I am in Lumpini on Rama 4 Road. There is a small, reasonable computer shop near my apartment and I took mine there and he re-configured my operating system and programs for me. I haven't had anymore problems since, if you need someone like him to work on yours, you can message me and I will give you his contact information.

personally, I use Comodo Dragon Firewall. It filters all incoming traffic and destroys these virus/malware attacks. I use YAC to back that up and I also create restore points at least 5 times a month. Lastly, I make computer back-ups on my 1Tb external drive as well as store my movies and music there. Also copy all my photos to PhotoBucket as it's free and in the cloud.

To help you with your issue, give this a read and try the fixes listed. http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/mmpc/shared/ransomware.aspx

I'm not sure what you mean. When you are browsing the upload you use is mostly due to requests from the internet and sending emails and their attachments. Your browser sends a request for a web page when you click on a link in your browser or your email client requests a send and receive etc. That's really not much bandwidth over time. If you send attachments in emails that's more upload bandwidth which in normal use isn't much. Download just takes a bit of upload for the request, and then the picture, other file or whatever comes in as download which is much bigger than the data in the request.

If I misunderstood you, shoot the question back in different words.
