China to buy 1m tonnes of Thai rice
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Commerce Minister Gen Chatchai Sarikalya announced today that China and Thailand recently reached the government-to-government deal for the transaction of 1 million tonnes of Thai rice.

He said the shipment of the jasmine and white rice would start in December.

The transaction is based on market prices and it does not involve barter trade, he said.

Thailand also aims to open another negotiation for the sale of additional 1 million tonnes to China during September 13-14.

Ahh that old chestnut eh. Nice government to government dealing. Best check the thai front company is more than a week old and isn't listed as a specialized trader of star wars figurines or some other such nonsense.....

China being one of the largest rice producers in the world, one has to wonder if there's ulterior motives behind this purchase. Knowing the Chinese, I would have to say there is.

True about the Chinese, however it still beats getting bombed into the stone age in the name of democracy.

China buying rice is a quandry.

While it imports rice, it also EXPORTS rice. In 2014 China exported about $378 million USD, ranking 9th in the top ten rice exporters in terms of VALUE; India ranked first followed by Thailand. The disparity may be explained by fluictuation in Chinese domestic prices. When prices rise enough above what can be purchased from overseas, China imports rice.

So currently the Chinese may be taking advantage of cheap foreign rice while stockpiling its more expensive domestic rice. However, we won't know the truth as the sale to China is another G2G sale with no transparency and China considers all its production as state secrets.

This doesn't look like it's a FAKE rice sale, whistling.gif It sounds genuine. Maybe a real authentic signing for a change.
