If, and it is quite a big if, you were able to isolate the banknote, then DNA from that could be cross-referenced with DNA found in the taxi. To get a match on those two sources could provide a lead I suppose. If the police were able to do that it would be a major achievement. Lots of ifs so one would have to be very sceptical that this is merely bluster to show apparent progress.

DNA from banknotes and taxi touched by god knows how many people. What a joke. The RTP are so stupid that they think they are smart.

How in heck does a driver know which bills came from which person, especially 20 baht notes? Drivers make change dozens of times each day.

How can you issue a warrant for someone when you have no idea who they are?

I don't understand why we have heard nothing more about the Red shirt guy who posted the warning days before the bombing? He was quoted in the other newspaper as saying he got the info from the Facebook account of a political group.

If the 20 baht note came from a customer of course you would expect a DNA match in the taxi. That could be said of every 20 baht note the driver might have and proves nothing. The question is, what did the driver do to isolate one particular 20 baht note for a day or two before handing over to the BIB?

The DNA fom the banknote matches the CCTV picture of the suspected bomber!

You have to give the police credit where it's deserved.

And the BIB said the investigation was going slowly due to lack of technology resources. Kind of flies in the face of being capable of matching DNA with video footage. Ranks right up there with the world's first hernia transplant.

Thai court issues warrant for suspect in second bomb blast

BANGKOK (AP) — A Thai court on Thursday issued an arrest warrant for an unnamed suspect in a riverside blast that occurred a day after the bombing of a shrine in central Bangkok which killed 20 people.

Police spokesman Prawut Thawornsiri said the suspect appeared in a security video that shows a blurry image of an unidentified man in a blue shirt kicking a bag into the water near a busy pier on the night of Aug. 17, soon after the explosion at the Erawan Shrine.

An explosion took place near the spot about 18 hours later on Aug. 18, but caused no casualties.

The blast at the Erawan Shrine was unprecedented in the Thai capital, where smaller bombs have been employed in domestic political violence over the past decade, but not in an effort to cause large-scale casualties.

Police have not determined a clear motive for the shrine bombing, which injured more than 120 people in addition to the 20 fatalities. Possible suspects include Muslim separatists from southern Thailand, parties seeking to avenge the forced repatriation of ethnic Uighurs to China by the Thai government, opponents of Thailand's military government and feuding factions within the security services.

The warrant issued Thursday by the South Bangkok Criminal Court says the suspect in the river blast faces charges of attempted premeditated murder, exploding a bomb that could cause harm and unauthorized possession of explosives, Prawut said. It does not specify the suspect's name or nationality, but describes him as having white skin, a pointed nose and short hair, and being about 170 centimeters (5 foot, 7 inches) tall and weighing about 65 kilograms (143 pounds).

Police have not definitively linked the two blasts according to their public statements. They have said a network of people must have been involved in the shrine bombing. An arrest warrant was issued last week for a suspect in that explosion, also without a name or nationality. No arrests have been made in either case.

Criticism of the police investigation has been strong because few facts have been clearly established, including the type of explosives used in the bombs. Authorities have been accused of rapidly hosing down the crime scene at the shrine before all forensic evidence was recovered so it could be reopened to reassure the public — especially foreign tourists — that security in the city was back to normal.

The shrine is a popular tourist destination, particularly with Chinese visitors, who represent an important segment of the lucrative tourist market. At least six of the dead were from China and Hong Kong.

Police say they have been handicapped by low-quality and broken surveillance cameras and a lack of sophisticated image processing equipment to enhance the video they do have. They have interviewed taxi drivers who claim to have driven the suspects, and say they are also combing through phone records.

They acknowledge that they have few clues to go on so far and that the bombers may have fled the country.

"I have to say we need some luck," national police chief Somyot Poompanmoung told reporters Sunday. "If the police have good fortune, we might be able to make an arrest, but ... if the perpetrators have good fortune maybe they can get away."

Prawut explained in detail on TV the other day about the DNA search. He acknowledged that without confirmed DNA of an identified suspect, DNA from banknotes and vehicles wouldn't tell them who to look for. The idea is more to see if they can find any matching DNA among these sources, which could then be used as strong evidence against a suspect, once they have one.

Don't waste your time trying to figure out what's going on from these Nation stories, which seldom make sense, and are usually written and headlined to make the cops look bad.

Do the knockers never get tired of ....knocking ....or is it just a way of relieving inner frustrations they may be harbouring. Try going to visit a sick person in a hospital, you'd be surprised how different that will make you feel afterwards. Positive thinking and action produces positive results.....on the other hand ...negative etc., etc., etc., ...Or one could always go back home where the authorities just simply plant the evidence rather than bother looking for it.

I went to a Chinese wedding some years ago, and some guy (a distant relative of the groom as I recall) spouted on interminably about the benefits of positive thinking, already a pseudo-science that most intelligent people had grown bored with 20 years earlier in the west). Taken in aggregate, what he took 20 minutes to say could have been said in 3, and was almost completely useless - an article of personal faith that he wanted to browbeat everyone else with.

It is voodoo psychology. Fit only for folk who are either relatively unintelligent or who are prepared to believe almost anything. If there's a buck in it.

Not really useful for discussion forums in the 21st Century.

Not entirely off-topic,, since the police investigation into the bombing is much the same in terms of credibility: "Fit only for folk who are either relatively unintelligent or who are prepared to believe almost anything. If there's a buck in it."

DNA from a banknote. DNA from a tuk-tuk. DNA from a taxi. Seriously?

Dear God, please make it stop

Now all the BIB need to do is test 67,000,000 people currently in Thailand and the case should be solved straight after that.

Or just grab a couple Burmese and pin it on them. Seems to have always worked in the past.

There is no way in hell these pinheads are going to accurately pinpoint a suspect, based on DNA, on a banknote that has been mixed with other notes, in the pocket of a Bangkok tuk tuk driver. Any attempt to hang this on a patsy, a reasonable person would conclude, will bring about one serious negative and international backlash! Man up Thailand! Admit your failures!

F's Sake! angry.gif

Suspect uses a Tuk Tuk, gives money, then uses a Taxi, if DNA is found matching one individual on those locations then it can be determined that it comes from the suspect because it would be highly improvable that DNA from another single individual would be found there.

Is not that hard, Taxi has DNA and fingerprints from people belonging to Group A, Tuk Tuk contains DNA and fingerprints from Group B, the suspect used both vehicles therefore an intersection of Group A and Group B would be the DNA and/or fingerprints from the suspect.

Also iIf they have DNA and fingerprints that helps to verify the identity of the bomber if they find a suspect or use it to request assistance from Interpol to check DNA databases for a suspect.

They have taken the DNA from the bank notes / taxi, and have moved over to their top secret "We have the cure for Ebola" lab, and are injecting the DNA into a man there who they recently injected a gene that caused him to have weak eyesight, and curly black hair. They will then host a public collection of this man's DNA and broadcast it, but this time they will actually take the sample to compare to the bank notes. This will be broadcast on all channels with all of the top RTP brass pointing at the bank note and the "suspect".

People sweat especially when they are nervous and about to blow up lots of people, sweat can be transferred to bank notes and taxi seats and handles, sweat contains DNA. Not to difficult is it?

Have you EVER walked around BKK when you were NOT sweating?

I haven't.

Yup. Plus the DNA from the tuk-tuk driver thanks to the sweat in his pockets, plus the DNA of god knows how many hundreds, or thousands, of people who have handled that or those notes before this. Just saying...

Aaaaah...the DNA-expert from those other threads, where DNA was sooooo important and bullet- proof!

So enlighten me: now you have the DNA of ...approx. 100 people in the taxi and about 20.000 who touched the banknote (and honestly speaking: I doubt any of that!)...and now what?

Oh right...you just need the DNA of ONE SINGLE person to match that bunch of other DNA's and - voila- you have the bomber!

Great work!

F's sake!

Dream on!
