Most people believe with or without the draft charter, country is as divided as ever

BANGKOK: -- Over half of the people polled by Suan Dusit Poll say the country will still mired in political conflicts whether the draft constitution is accepted or rejected by the National Reform Council.

The poll was conducted by Suan Dusit University during August 2-5 ahead of the voting on the draft charter by the NRC on Sunday. Altogehter 1,200 people were polled.

On the question about the advantages of the acceptance of the draft by the NRC, the poll shows 84.62 of the respondents believe people will enjoy more freedom, 78.46 percent believe election will be held sooner and 72.77 percent believe there will be political change with an outsider being picked as the next prime minister.

On the question about the disadvantages of the draft acceptance, the poll shows 83.69 percent believe there will be troubles and more political division, 73.54 percent say the draft is undemocratic and 71.20 percent say political parties and politicians are directly affected by the draft.

On the question on the possible impacts toward the country, 80.10 percent of the respondents believe opponents of the draft will come out to protest, 72.92 percent believe Thailand’s image will be improved, and 67.85 percent believe the country will move forward with greater prosperity.

On the question of the merits of the rejection of the draft, 86.77 percent believe political conflict and confrontation will ease, 80 percent believe there will be more time to write a new charter, 62.33 percent believe political parties will have a chance in undertaking political activities.

On the question of the disadvantages of the rejection of the draft, 78.38 percent believe the drafting process is a waste of budget and election will be further delayed, 75.60 percent believe the government’s image will be bruised and its

stability shaken, and 61.54 percent believe charter drafting will have to start all over again or an old charter will have to be re-dusted and re-used

Small correction: All Thai polls are BS.

In my experience, until recently, many foreign polls had integrity - not so much grengjai floating aroun and clogging up the system. Not all by any means but many.

Not here though.

the plan is clear. Another few years of good people at the helm, and everyone will have forgotten about the other guy, and a fully elected party of retired generals and ex-Thaksin minsters will govern by a genuine majority.

Assuming those ex-Thaksin ministers haven't been jailed, and become ineligible to run.

I'm not surprised this poll was held back for a month. I has so many contradictory results, it could make your head spin.

I suspect the poll design was poor.

The results of this poll make no sense.

Finally a poll that gets a little closer to reflecting the reality.

One thing about THailand that is great is that Thailand provides all this free entertainment. Where else in the world does any nation make itself look so foolish as Thailand?

Not really, but you have to be very careful when you draft a poll question that gives a answer that avoids preconceived opinions in asking the question.

As an example here are two similar questions that will usually get different results.

• Child molesters should thrown in Jail and never allowed out.
• People accused of child molestation should be thrown in Jail and never allowed out.

A simple example, but just an illustration, of how "Political Polls" are easily biased by the person asking the question to get the desired answer.

One thing about THailand that is great is that Thailand provides all this free entertainment. Where else in the world does any nation make itself look so foolish as Thailand?

Until Thailand stops being two countries, Bangkok & everywhere else, it will remain deeply divided, the vast majority of opportunities, investment etc. go to Bangkok & the south, while most of the people live in the North & North east.

On a slight tangent, the same is true in the UK only not quite so extreme, You have London & the SE & everywhere else, with all the advantages going to London & the SE....

"Altogehter (sic) 1,200 people were polled." And how many of these had sifted through the 50,000 word document?

Out of 67 million, that really constitutes a representative sample.

So, back to the drawing board for the 20^th charter since 1932.
