A fair few people have tried to set up ThaiVisa clones over the years. All have failed. It would appear that the most recent attempt is the most embarrassing failure of all.

Why do you think ThaiVisa is so successful?

To be a ThaiVisa member, you must

go to church

not smoke

not drink

not be a master at baiting

& lastly no intimate relationship with an I Isaan girl

Easy!

Because we love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and we love the mods ! I do anyway smile.png

Should all of us armchair editors stand up and take a bow now? We keep it lively and interesting. We try to be civil but that at times fail. We like each other in rather a gruff manner correct each other when we feel the need arises. We try to do a one upmanship on the other fellow and well its do unto others as they do unto you. From the different answers to threads on here it shows our diversity in culture and thinking. Myself I try to stay away from a "shootout" with another poster. Brains baffles BS every time. Yes we love the mods they keep us in line but then they also give us a lot of leeway. New words that I have never used in years pop into my head and I do a Google polish on them and then use them in a sentence. I guess you could say that Thai visa is a senior education system for those of us that do not know it all but are willing to learn. Learning is the cornerstone of life and without it our house would crumble.

ThaiVisa is about what goes on behind the scenes. Private messages between friends. Exchanging photos, meeting up.

Why is ThaiVisa so successful?

Nothing is left to chance!

Variety, there is always some topic worth reading, and commenting on.

A concerted effort by members to turn out a good topic from nothing much!

I first glommed on to ThaiVisa in 2004 when I needed help in determining my long-term visa situation ... and it went downhill from there.

BTW I was able to secure one-year Non-IMM 'B' visa multi-entry for several years based on NGO activity in part with the info on here.

TV takes place of morning newspaper, with huge letters to the editor section that will get you published, unless you go way overboard. Now all they need is comics section.....

So Fabricus, you talk about over the years but you have only been a ThaiVisa member for just over a month.

Are you just another long term lurker who has had nothing interesting to add over the years or should the name Fabricus be changed to Fabrication.

What is your main posting name on this board?

Please do tell about the most recent attempt to clone ThaiVisa instead of prattling on in nonsensical sentences.

TV carries all the news of Thailand that you really did not want to hear...many articles more spicy than a Thai Soap...

It's the people on here of course !

Mainly I credit the Moderators. Yeah people gripe (or try to) about them but in reality without them I doubt TV would have survived this long.

As mention, just look at some of the "clones". They start up and are either immediately taken over by mongers trying to out-perv each other, or by a small group of people who flame and insult anyone outside of their particular group.

I knew one guy that started a site (I won't mention the name other than I'm not talking about any "door" made of "teak"). I joined because I knew the guy when he used to manage an establishment I frequented. Within a week or so some of his friends were posting some rather questionable material. One in particular appeared to be a rather young girl and the poster bragged about it in the comments. Between the picture and the comments it was pretty clear she was barely in her teens.

I reported the post (I don't want anything to do with child pornography or pedophiles) but all the admin did was delete the comment (they didn't want to upset the guy that posted it because he was either a friend or they wanted him to keep posting more pictures, regardless of the possible pedo problems). I deleted my account and never went back.

Other sites may have had great intentions but then devolved into lame "flame wars". Nobody wants to go to a site where they get insulted and ridiculed for every little thing. The moderators on TV keep a pretty good grip on things and are usually on top of matters quick enough to prevent them from devolving into something that's just going to P.O. everyone involved. We've had some massively huge threads on contentious subjects and the only reason they were able to run into the hundreds and hundreds of pages is because of the moderators, many of whom have to scan every post made and maintain a degree of neutrality (or abstinence) even when they themselves have strong views on the topic. Not easy to do !

Some people don't agree with the way they do things. Some try to bend the rules. Some go off the deep end as they are apparently under the mistaken impression that they have the right to say whatever they want about whoever they want. (The fact they probably wouldn't actually get away with saying the same things in real life, should they ever try, usually goes right over their heads.)

Some get all huffy and quit TV, some get banned. Some go onto other sites and then talk crap about the people on this site.

At one point I was accused of being a member of one such site when I'd never even gone there, ever. I'd heard about it and about the type of people that apparently were on that site and it held no interest for me but that didn't stop some people from making the accusation any ways (probably trying to get me banned from here because "their jimmies were rustled" over something I said). dry.png

Because of the moderation, people feel more comfortable on TV than other sites. Less chance of seeing things of a questionable nature, less chance of opening a thread only to see hate-filled posts where every second word is a profanity, less chance of being ridiculed for asking a question that may seem like common sense to most people but not so to others.

As a result, people are able to come here and ask questions and (normally) get well-informed, factual answers (except perhaps for the occasional trolls). Overall though I would have to say that the vast majority of people that respond to a question do try to provide quality answers/advice, even when the same question gets asked (seemingly) 2-3 times a week by people who claim they tried to search but couldn't find an answer anywhere on the site.

We actually had a thread that ran a few years back where we tried to determine if every question (about living/travelling/working/etc in Thailand) had already been asked (keeping in mind the restrictions on certain topics).

The members (most of them at least) also contribute hugely to the success of TV. People from all walks of life, from all over the planet (more or less, kinda-sort of). Some born here, some living here for decades, some long-term stayers, some tourists. Rich and poor. Working and retired.

It seems whenever someone has a question, TV has a member that's "been there, done that" in almost every part of the country. We've had members hop on scooters to find info out for other members. We've had members meet grieving relatives at the airport and provide assistance while they were in country. Some TV members spend most of their time on a bar stool (or wishing they could). Others are out and about donating both time and money to various charities and organizations. Some are here for the climate, some for work, some for various other reasons (like riding my Harley in January wearing a t-shirt) !

Little wonder that every question that could be asked probably has been asked, and answered, considering the wide range of wisdom and experience available. That has itself been a huge part of why ThaiVisa has been so successful over the years.

Without the Mods and without the members, most of us wouldn't be here (on this site) now !

(Oh and of course George, without whom none of this would be here either !)

I thought English was the preferred language on Thai Visa.

"Glommed" ?? OMG!!

Thaivisa.com is good in spite of itself. I am hoping the new owners take a strong long look at certain aspects and makes some deep changes ... I can only be vague ... as there is no way to discuss it ... unless I want to give up membership...

I wonder what Fabricus' previous incarnation was before banning or maybe fabricus is a sock puppet account for one of the current trolls
