Depression Vamco to bring more rains as less water will be released from dams

BANGKOK: -- The Royal Irrigation Department has decided to cut back the amount of water released out of the four major dams into the Chao Phraya river basin in anticipation of more rainfalls during September 16-18 as a result of depression storm Vamco.

Vamco moved in northeastern Thailand from Vietnam Tuesday morning and the storm was expected to bring more rains in the Northeast during September 16-17, lower northern region and the central plains as well as parts of the eastern region during September 17-18.

The expected rainfalls will increase the amount of water flowing into dams and the panel charged with monitoring water situation decided to instruct the Royal Irrigation Department to cut back the amount of water to be released from the four main dams.

Bhumibol dam, from 4 million cubic metres per day down to three million; Sirikit dam, from 9 million cubic metres/day down to 5 million; Kwaenoi Bamrungdaen, from 1.04 million cubic metres/day down to 900,000 cubic metres; Pasak Cholasit, from 1.06 million cubic metres/day down to 900,000 cubic metres and Chao Phraya dam, from 70 cubic metre/second down to 65.

The combined usable water in the four main dams was measured at 2,200 million cubic metres and there is a need for an addition of 1,300 million cubic metres to meet the minimum demand of water of 3,500 million cubic metres to last through the summer.

Mr Smith Thammasaroj, president of the National Disaster Foundation, said depression Vamco was a blessing for farmers as it was the first storm of the year. He predicted there might be 4-5 storms to hit Thailand before the end of the rainy season and the later storms might be strong and the public should be forewarned so they could get prepared.

Had very little compared to the warnings. KHon Kaen has a few showers for 10-15 mins and then gone. What is it with KHON KAEN we never get it goodo style like when Pattaya gets it. It has gone nice and cooler though.

Bankok lost its 'g' ???

The Government is banning everything else, so they may as well ban it too!

See what that does to their tourist figures.

looks like it is heading straight for Hua Hin. I better charge a few batteries and buy a can of tuna fish. smile.png

By the time it hits us it will be a dust storm. lol

Love that map, that's awesome!

+1. Very awesome weather animation. Worth looking at.

Much better than this ugly piece of crap.

It has been forecast that the Northeast of Thailand will experience more rain today until the end of this week as tropical storm Vamco has made landfall in Laos.

He means the storm has entered from ocean to land.

It has rained all night here just North of Pattaya, but not heavy thunderstorms, just steady.

Darn, she took the truck!

How is the water level in the Dams near Hua Hin? I guess if the storms get past BKK and

get over there, there will be lots of water for hydro power again this Winter.

I only remember that the rains ran off the ground and into the sea pretty fast, then like went on only about one

or two days after a storm. BKK has more to worry about, as I was there just after the big flood. It was

a challenge to get around quite a few places. Good luck to all of you, stock up on the

good beverages, and of course a few necessary chips and cans of food just in case.

no need for airco last night, even covered up myself with the blanket the misses uses, for the first time
