My BP medicine (hydrochlorothiazide) is making me hoarse.

Featured Replies

I have been using Hydrochlorothiazide in conjunction with Metroprolol to manage my blood pressure for the last 3 years, but in the lat 6 months or so I have noticed a hoarseness in my voice plus a minor difficulty in swallowing. Apparently these can be side effects from the Hydrochlorothiazide. What could I be prescribed instead so I don't have this problem?

Do a Google on Hydrochlorothiazide and you can view some side affects.

Is also known as a diuretic and/or water pill.

Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause

fluid retention.

Hydrochlorothiazide (abbreviated HCTZ, HCT, or HZT), is a diuretic medication often used to treat high blood pressure and

swelling due to fluid build up.

I have already said I'm aware of the side effects.

Neither hoarseness nor dysphagia (trouble swallowing) are common as a side effect of hydrochlorthiazide. I really doubt this is what is causing it especially as you have been on this medication for some years.

These can be potentially serious symptoms especially (but not only) if you have a history of smoking. They can also often result from gastric reflux which can happen without your being aware of it.

I suggest you see a good ENT specialist to get it evaluated.

Went and saw the ENT specialist at BKK/Pattaya hospital this morning. Had an endoscope poked down my throat, didn't feel a thing surprisingly, and it turns out my vocal cords have thickened and got furry with age, so that took a weight off my mind. Cost was 5400 baht but it was worth every penny to know it was nothing serious.
