Water levels in Mekong River steadily decline

NAKHON PHANOM, 25 September 2015 (NNT) - The declining water levels in the Mekong River have prompted officials in Nakhon Phanom province to retain more water in its reservoirs.

Mekong River water levels are declining at the rate of 20-30 centimeters per day and beginning to affect many rice fields.

Water is now being diverted into the reservoir under the Nam Kam Basin Development Project to make sure there will be at least 60% capacity to sustain the growth of rice and household consumption.

Farmers living outside of the irrigation system have been advised not to grow crops, as there may not be enough water.

NRC’s Thiwa in support of Meechai & Tassana as heads of new committees

BANGKOK, 25 September 2015 (NNT) - Meechai Ruchupan is the most suitable person to chair the new Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC), former member of the National Reform Council Thiwa Karakasang has said.

According to Mr Thiwa, the new CDC member should be a political scientist lawmaker with an expertise in drafting and interpreting laws. He has, therefore, concluded that Mr Meechai is the most suitable candidate for the job thanks to well-known law maker's experience with the country’s conflicts.

Mr. Thiwa added that the new constitution should be an updated version of its predecessors because a completely new draft could lead to misinterpretation, while the controversial section for a strategic reform and reconciliation committee should be added later as an organic law.

As regards the new reform mobilization committee, Mr. Thiwa said it should include up to 60 percent of the former National Reform Council. He also said he was in support of Tassana Boonthong as the head of the committee, given that she was a well respected individual with a clear set of values.
