Moon puts on stunning display during eclipse

606x341_314233.jpg

Star gazers have been treated to a stunning lunar display as the Earth cast its shadow over the familiar orb gradually producing a reddish glow.
The rare celestial event was caused by the combination of a lunar eclipse with a so-called “supermoon” – that’s what the moon is called when it is in the closest part of its orbit to Earth, meaning it appears larger in the sky.
Clear skies permitting , the event was visible from North and South America, Europe, Africa and pats of West Asia and the eastern Pacific.
The eclipse made the Moon appear red giving rise to the description “blood moon”.
The colouring is caused by Earth’s atmosphere scattering sunlight into the shadow.
The last time it happened was in 1982 and it won’t happen again until 2033.

I am in Australia at the moment and I missed it. Have seen some fabulous photos though. I doubt that I will be around for the next event. But an amazing visual experience. Was it visible in Thailand? Maybe too cloudy.

Thanks for the post. It was beautiful to watch.

It's good we are in the year 2015. I'm sure a couple of hundred years back this beautiful picture would be linked to Caliphate coming.
