Palestinian flag raised at the United Nations headquarters for the first time

NEW YORK: -- The Palestinian flag was raised for the first time at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The ceremony took place weeks after the UN General Assembly passed a motion to allow the flag and that of the Vatican to be raised.

Israel voted against the motion along with the United States and six other countries.

Watching the ceremony was the President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas. Earlier he had addressed the UN General Assembly.

In his annual speech he said it was unconscionable that the question of Palestinian statehood remained unresolved.

“As long as Israel refuses to cease settlement activities and to release the fourth group of Palestinian prisoners in accordance with our agreements, they leave us no choice but to insist that we will not remain the only ones committed to the implementation of these agreements.

‘Whoever is looking for peace and wants to fight terrorism, has to begin finding a solution for the Palestinian conflict,“he said.

There was a standing ovation in the Assembly while Israeli officials said they were studying the speech.

Israeli-Palestinian strife has risen sharply in recent weeks. Arab states and Palestinians have accused Israeli forces of violations at Al-Aqsa mosque, one of Islam’s holiest places.

Commentators say there is a sense of growing frustration among many Palestinians over the paralysis in peace negotiations with Israel.

Please answer honestly.

What is reasonable when your neighbour, aside from mass killings of your people, continues to expand into your land and oppress with violent force your people's resistance?

"Reasonable" is subjective, so lets look at what "reasonable" means to you.

You have a farm. It's quite big, and you have a big extended family living all about the farm. Each family member has small plots of gardens and orchards, water sources etc. The government says you must give up xxx acres of land because we have some refugees that need to be re-settled. You don't have much choice, and it happens. There is ill-will on both sides. 20 years later, the new settlers attack and take over a further xyz acres, and because the government has one powerful MP who blindly supports the settlers, nothing is done about the capturing of your land.

Fast forward a further 50 years. The newcomers continue to grab more of your land, displacing your family members, destroying their orchards and gardens, and taking over the water supplies. They are stronger than you and you have little to fight with. The government condemns the settlers, but is toothless because of that one powerful MP who continues to block all efforts of the government to insist on law and order.

How "reasonable" would you be? You have to already face the reality that you lost the first amount of land, and then the 2nd land grab is so established that you are forced to accept that too....you accept it....but the newcomers are taking more and more, every day...and when you fight, they kill you in the thousands. When do you put your foot down? What is reasonable???

"To the victor goes the spoils" has been a adage in most of recorded history. Seems these lands were part of a war due to the attacks on Israel, is that not correct? I do not agree with holding the land anymore than I agree with rockets from Palestine in to Israel.

I believe there is a Texas saying, "If you don't start something there will not be something" !

By the way for my opinion they can move the worthless UN out of NYC and the USA, they don't pay their bills and their people do not obey the laws in NYC, pay the fines when imposed.

Congratulations, Palestine... a great victory for the majority of countries in the world in favor of recognizing Palestine.

And also a way to honor the many Palestinians who were shot dead by Israel for trying to raise the Palestinian flag from 1967 - 1993.

In 1967, immediately following the Six Day War, the State of Israel banned the Palestinian flag in the occupied Gaza Strip and West Bank. A 1980 law forbidding artwork of "political significance" banned artwork composed of its four colours, and Palestinians were arrested for displaying such artwork.
The ban was revoked in 1993, but Netanyahu's racist cabinet now wants to reimpose it.

A very positive development, and one that will show the Palestinians that they have recourse to international law.

This is the way to fight Israeli aggression as opposed to stones and homemade rockets.

Israel by its actions is isolating itself in the same way that apartheid South Africa did not so long ago.
