BANGKOK: -- AFTER six baby crocodiles escaped a farm in tambon Bo Kradan in Ratchaburi's Pak Tho district due to heavy rains on Sunday, deputy provincial governor Ronnapop Luengpairoj yesterday instructed the 31 crocodile farms in the province to ensure no further escapes from their pits.

Only four of the six crocodiles were captured as of Monday night, and many members of the public are now keen to find the other two in the hope of getting the Bt5,000-per-crocodile reward offered by the farm.

Ronnapop said the farms have one week to make improvements before a team of officials inspects the pits next Monday. He warned that if any farms are found lacking in proper safety and escape-prevention measures, owners will lose licences to breed crocodiles.

Continuous rains since Saturday caused water levels in the farm's pits to rise, and the baby crocodiles escaped while workers were draining excessive water into a nearby canal.

Meanwhile, Rayong Governor Somsak Suwansujarit has ordered officials to prepare for a second round of flooding and alert people living in at-risk areas to move their belongings to higher ground.

Overnight rain resulted in flooding in Nikhom Pattana district, with Klong Thab Ma overflowing and inundating tambon Thab Ma and Wat Kached.

So, Somsak held a meeting with related agencies yesterday and called for more flood-prevention measures. He also had 31 water pumps installed to drain the water.

How do deeper pits stop further escapes during a flood?

I would have thought fencing is needed instead...

Perhaps there is something being taught in Thai schools that is not taught in the rest of the world?

Maybe BBQ pits would be better
