Actually cost is also for the type of lens used. My basic lens operations done here in Bangkok at Vejthani Hospital in full OR this year were 35k plus 1k for lens size measurement each so prices lower than 60k are available - expect much lower at some places.

I found Rutnin hospital a little bit cheaper than Queen Sirikit hospital and Rutnin is a far superior hospital than that one in Sattahip.

What price did you find a Rutnin and Queen Sirikit? Rutnin is a dedicated eye hospital - not a general hospital.

For cataract surgery was about 10,000B cheaper at Rutnin that Queen Sirikit. This was 2 years ago.

I have found in Queen Siriikit that they price gauge the foreigners.

I was originally quoted 36000 at Vejthani, then when to book it later was quoted 60000 for Farang, told them to stick it, I said I lived in Thailand, not Tourist made no difference. The Doctor in Buriram 20000 for Mono 30000 for Multi Focal, he Uses Quality Lenses, American Company, Alcon. A good Deal!

Both I and Thai wife were also quoted higher price but actual price was 35k for both of us when billed. Suspect they quote the multi focal price.

Judging by the name I would have thought they'd specialize in belly buttons. ?

"I have found in Queen Siriikit that they price gauge [sic] the foreigners."

The hospital's priority is Thai military personnel and dependents and secondarily for other Thai citizens for whom it is subsidized. There are signs up stating that prices for foreigners will necessarily be higher than for Thais, but even so I found they tend to be considerably cheaper than other hospitals in the area.

I was going to have hernia surgery done there at about half the price quoted at other hospitals. The problem was that since it was not an emergency, they would only schedule it several months out. I ended up having it done at BPH, scheduled a few days after I first saw the surgeon. Excellent experience at BPH, but I also found everyone at Queen Sirikit to be very helpful and quite professional ... although it's a good idea to have a Thai speaker with you. The doctors I saw were trained in the US and thoroughly fluent in English, but support staff were mainly Thai speakers. And if you want a private room you'll need someone to stay with you, otherwise you'll be put in a ward if you need to remain in the hospital overnight.

Guys, If you are really in need, the trip to Buriram will be worth it, Multifocal not recommended, to many likely issues, I researched all before doing this, all the Hospitals, Rutnin, BP, Vejthani, etc. This Doctor was trained in Australia, his Clinic is Immaculate! Farang Style. I know of 2 People who went to the Naval Hospital, both had problems, one is now almost Blind. I will comment no more!

Worth pointing out that i) cataract surgery is so essentially simple that the Sightsavers charity teaches volunteers to do it in villages with a little bag of tools, and ii) when it goes wrong you'll lose the eye.

Vibrating thing, suck out liquidized natural lens, inject folded artificial lens, no stitches, chloramphenicol drops, maybe Predsol steroid, Bob's your uncle.

But if the vitreous slops forward and you get a detached retina, or you get an eye infection, you are truly in the s***.

Do your research, and defend yourself at all times.

Had one eye done at Rutnin last month--62,000+ baht for the procedure itself. The exam and follow up are a few thousand (4K?) baht more.

The Mayo clinic reckon that cataracts are more likely with some behaviors and risk factors. I've bold/underlined the ones that I think a lot of people might usefully think about. Intraocular surgery is a sod, and to be avoided as long as possible, at least in part because if enough decades pass the vitreous gel might slowly and incrementally peel of the retina, which is a lot better than sudden movement.

Increasing age
Diabetes
Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol
Excessive exposure to sunlight
Exposure to ionizing radiation, such as that used in X-rays and cancer radiation therapy
Family history of cataracts
High blood pressure
Obesity
Previous eye injury or inflammation
Previous eye surgery
Prolonged use of corticosteroid medications
Smoking
