Sihanoukville’s Holiday Clean-up

Featured Replies

Khmer Times/Jack Laurenson

While Sihanoukville’s relatively new chief of police has promised to clean up the coastal city’s streets figuratively, the new director of environment here is doing it quite literally.

Locals and expats have been impressed by cleaner streets and increasingly active municipal authorities recently, with new city governor Y Sokleng joining his environment director Samuth Sothearith on the streets to get his hands dirty on more than one occasion in recent weeks.

Late last week, in preparation for the upcoming holiday, municipal bosses motivated some 400 volunteers to get their plastic gloves on and start scouring the streets for trash, which is a constant trouble for the Kingdom’s premier coastal resort.

If they could eliminate the beggars of the place,

it would be more enjoyable.

Pattaya will take them in!

Hope they don't overlook the white trash.

I spent a few days at the beach in shinukville and was disappointed that the beach was not cleared of trash. Took a walk along the beach around 7am. Plastic bottles, bags, cups, and spent fireworks everywhere. I was surprised also that many businesses near the beach were going out of business. Seems shinukville is where every fillipino from Tacoban relocated. Beggars with white envelops saying they are a children's NGO. A lot of trash needs to be removed.
