Excellent western food in BKK, where?

My wife and me were dreaming about the good old days of the Barbican which was an excellent pub/restaurant at sala daeng.

Can anybody recommend another very good restaurant in BKK?

The Bulls head was from the same owner as the Barbican, does it have great food as well these days?

With excellent food i mean great fish fillets (no bones or skin) with sauce and spinach/potato. Or good soft steaks served with stirfried vegy's, good mixed grill.

They also had great lamb on skewers, everything was very good quality there except the smell of old beer, it also had a pub inside.

We are no boozers just want to eat decent cooked western food in a relaxed atmosphere, nothing fancy. Any recommendations?

WOW, I want something like this in my city, but up until that time, well equipped kitchen is absolutely essential for every falang.

There's a Mexican "fusion" place called "Mejico" (I think...) in that new area next to Siam Central World. Owners - an engaged couple - are a Canadian + a native of Mexico City. She a chef with credentials, and their head chef a veteran of some high falutin world competitions. Worth a try - I liked it. 'The closest thing I've had to authentic Mexican food anywhere in Thailand. (PS - they'll make the guacamole at your table)

And you can eat at half price if you use Eatigo (http://www.eatigo.com/home/th/en/restaurant/name/mejico/?date=2015-12-15&time=20.00).

For Mexican also try El Diablo (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g293916-d2513491-Reviews-El_Diablo_s_Burritos-Bangkok.html)

Thanks guys, we're gonna try all of them. Here in the subs there's nothing like those places, they even look like real restaurants!

I'm tired of Sizzlers which is the best we can get around here. There's nothing wrong with Sizzlers though except the crying baby's they always bring.

Add the Smoking Pug to your list: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g293916-d7705758-Reviews-Smokin_Pug_American_BBQ-Bangkok.html

Best steaks in town in my opinion- El Grocho in asoke- nice busy and fun atmosphere too- around 3,000 baht per person including wine . Hard Rock Cafe siam sqaure also does great burgers, ribs.

It's a lot of money for a steak...and they use frozen chips to accompany it!

For 3000 Baht minimum!!!

Steak of perfectly good quality at No Idea for 1000 Baht....but the real steal is the Lamb Shank in my opinion.

Yes a good sized steak should cost 800-1000+ baht, if it's cheaper then probably it isn't any good. And to cook it medium rare it takes a real chef.

There's also a Tony Roma in Paragon with good ribs, i've been there once but for the price they charged it wasn't worth it imo. It was good though.

But i'm more a fillet mignon guy, with nice sauce and mushrooms if possible.

For fish i like any good fillet, that was my favorit dish in the Barbican. Snapperfillet on top of fresh spinach (still don't know how they could always have that in stock) with a red peppersauce (not spicy). Some steamed mini potato's and a draft beer.

Frozen chips are fine for me but i need the thick ones of 10 mm. Good potato wedges are also welcome.

Also i appreciate it when the waiters can speak english, in the Barbican they all could. God i miss that place.tongue.pngtongue.png

I was at El Goucho a few days ago. I do rate the place - it is consistently very good or better. It isn't cheap, but once in a while it's nice to enjoy it.

I've never had the fries there so I can't comment on them. I'm more of a mash guy myself.

Yes El Gaucho must be doing well as they have now opened another restaurant in the same building as Masala Art in Thonglor opposite the Irish pub.

I've only ever had the burger there...with a beer it came to over 1k Baht.

Not really worth it imho but each to their own.

El Gaucho is way-way over priced. For that reason I also eat my steaks while in KL (http://steakhousekl.com/menu-category/menu). For some reasons they don't list prices on their website, but it is 88 RM for the 300 g rib eye steak, cooked to perfection.

Of course wine is expensive in KL.

The Black Swan used to have decent food. I haven't tried it at their new location on Sukhumvit 19 but presume it's still good.

Haven't eaten in house as it were but I order their fry up brekkie regularly by food by phone and find it quite acceptable.

I find the Black Swan has rather average food, in huge portions. Presumably Americans love it.

I've never eaten there but 100 Baht beer always hits the spot.

100 baht beer feel like a steal at Sukhumvit, but then the other weekend I was in Pranburi and was served an ice cold Chang at a bar with sea view for 40 baht, Sukhumvit does give you a certain price numbness.

Just for the record, there is a decent bar with an all day 60 baht beer happy hour in Soi 13.

I think Smokie is talking about a pint, not one of those child-size bottles.
