I prefer places where the people enjoying themselves are younger, not exclusively male, and sometimes even Thai.

Phuket is like one BIG Nana then. Driving past bar after bar full of old grey haired men. It's like one massive Darby and Joan Club, without the Joans. I, like you, am all for a little diversity, sadly lacing here on God's Waiting Room. Why don't I leave? Bloody house coffee1.gif

I wasn't aware I needed a reason to comment on an open forum.

Oh, you don't need one. I was just interested.

I can't imagine what reason you think I might have, other than to share my opinion on the subject at hand. Odd thing to say.

I can't imagine what reason you might have, hence the question. But let's let it go.

What a puzzling exchange that was.

You don't 'have' to see that side of Thailand at all. I've been coming here for fifteen years and never felt the need to.

As for the idea that it's part of Thai culture? That's funny.

Isn't it better to see all sides? You can't deny that to many people overseas, it is seen as part of Thai culture. It does exist, even if you never visit and have no idea about what goes on.

Try telling any ordinary workaday Thai that whoring is 'part of Thai culture' and stand back, well back .. smile.png

Tell the truth, that they also know is the truth, and stand well back.

Cover up and sugarcoat everything so everyone can smile like a moron and feel at ease.

It's much easier for them than talking about a truth that they view as negative.

I wouldn't use the word "whoring" but most Thais know that prostitution has always been part of the culture (and still is).

Yes. You keep telling your mongering selves (your's in particular stand out as being a meister monger) that. Takes the edge off, doesn't it. And yes, the adjective is Whoring. Delusional Imbecile.

Nana and lower Suk has the most interesting stretch of sidewalk in the world. I head down there every night to sit back with a beer and watch the festivities.

Farangs, young and old, modish young folk without a care in the world, older ones who have seen in it all but aren't quite ready to call it a life yet, Arab men in dishdishas, their women in hijabs trailing behind scrutinizing intently roadside stalls ready to pounce on the littlest trinket that catches their eye, oriental men, Japanese, Korean and now maybe the Chinese, walking always with a purpose and very polite if they bump into someone, shady African men pushing powder and some gorgeous women from the dark continent, Indians, always more than one, noisy, cheap and happy, and, of course, Thais of all three sexes.

And, the people who graze late night on Suk, call them what you will, are always interesting to clink glasses with. Even the losers are because they have a twisting tale to tell of what done them in and how they're going to conquer the world again. And maybe they will - if they're on Suk at 2 in the morning they're halfway back to the top again, aren't they?

If you don't like Nana then, my friend, I hope you are surrounded by your children and grandchildren and their wives and kids as you breathe your last in a little cottage in a lonely village far far away.

I totally agree and clearly writing talent!

My mongering days are long over mate. But my understanding of Thai culture is pretty spot on. (And I prefer not to resort to childish insults).

Very true. A night spent in a G-club with Thai businessmen is an eye opener!

Definition of culture

Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts.

A character trait of Thai men is to cheat and find themselves in the many Karoke type bars thought all areas of Thailand be it tourist areas or the simple villages. It is a habit and most do it or have done it in the past.. The Thai/Thai prostitution business dwarfs anything provided for foreigners...For anybody to say otherwise is deluded..And as for needing to see the sights like Nana etc I feel that as a adult and sensible and as a European are for the most part inquisitive why shouldn't you go and visit and see what's all the fuss is about..No you don't have to partake and indeed people watching can be so much fun. And yes I respect the right of someone not to go but if you are strong why should it be a problem...Its difficult to comment on something if you've never visited or even experienced what people are talking about...

I quite like Nana and the nearby areas :) Very multicultural atmosphere; chance to meet people from around the world; lots of places to sit down, have a beer and do people/action watching; plenty of various international and local cuisine; all sort of amenties/services avaliable (no, I don't necessarily mean sex; hehe).

Of course, there are some annoying people, local and foreign; but I haven't found the number of them to be disturbingly high.

I wouldn't like to stay right in the heart of that area for an extended period of time; but, on my stays in Bangkok, I like to go to that area quite often.

That area used to be great many years back when it had the rickety rackety permanent street bars, and it wasn't over run with Africans causing trouble. Of course its seedy but it was pretty safe compared to most places with prostitution going on.

I don't like going to bars in city centres of Britain, so i don't go .... this way it avoids me having to start topics on web forums where i attempt to come across as holier-than-thou. Me thinks some of you protest too much.

Look at this way.

Do you prefer to live in NANA or some remote village in the middle of Isan?

The korrect- up 2 you- we all want different things. There isnt a wrong answer.

You no doubt believe Bangkok consists of the area between Nana and Soi Cowboy.

I'm glad...it leaves the rest of town for us normal people.

booked for 3 nights hotel on soi7/1 cant wait, love a few nights around nana at the end of my holiday,of course its a dump one day they will pimp it up and it will be sanitized and become a mall but not yet please.

I bet you that place makes more money for Bangkok than any of those shopping malls.

Sad day for BKK if this place ever does get bulldozed, its already on its way to becoming as sterile as Singapore but without the safety.

They don't anywhere near as much trouble as the fat, filthy white paedophiles checking out the kiddie porn DVDs being offered for sale on the stalls or the drunken white desperadoes who think it's ok to grope any woman walking by.

Notorious red light areas around the world are not places where charming and friendly people tend to gather.

But surely these birds that tell the members of the fat, ugly, tattooed, facial haired brigade that they are handsome, are friendly, although they are liars.
