Zika virus: US scientists say vaccine '10 years away'
By James Cook
BBC News, Galveston, Texas

GALVESTON: -- American scientists studying the Zika virus have warned that it could be a decade before a vaccine is publicly available.

The virus is linked to shrunken brains in unborn children, leading to severe brain damage or death.

It has spread to more than 20 countries, and has caused panic in Brazil where thousands of people have been infected.

As yet the link is unproven.

Some scientists have indicated that a vaccine could be available in a year....if unlike Dengue, there is only one strain then a vaccine would be much easier.

There are also some promising measures to render the Aedes mosquito incapable as a vector or interfere with its breeding. Of course this involves GM......

You cannot fool, Mother Nature. Creating anti mosquito tech. will effect some other insects and will cause more problems.

As long is it's not in Bangkok, who cares.

Who cares? Probably the billions of people who do not live in Bangkok, including the millions who still live in Thailand. I am guessing it will only be a matter of time before this virus reaches SE Asia.

who cares? Women / couples who have a child with microcephaly! - As the Aedes mosquito prefers urban environments it is most likely that Bangkok will be the first place for it to show up. Zika also doesn't differentiate between class so given that the middle classes are also at risk, one can imagine the government will take this seriously.

As for the change in vectors, well this hasn't happened yet but this is always possible in nature with or without human interference. however a successful control of the vector and a vaccine could result in such a reduction in the virus that any changes or effects could become insignificant....at least for a long period.
