Foreigners who brag about their status in Thailand

Recommended Posts

Sorry but the ban is off before it got started.I am proud of being a CHEAP CHARLIE.If i pay more than 500 baht for a nice room,i'm moaning.Being known as a cheap charlie keeps farangs and Thais from pestering me.It took me a long time to get my money together and being a cheap charlie helps that cash last a long time,so i don't have to go back to the thing i don't like, working for the man.I am not here to make other people rich.

People who actually have money, seldom if ever talk about it, its considered "vulgar".

Those that insist on talking about it, generally dont have anything to shout about, they just "think" they do by comparing themselves to what they perceive as a poor Thai farmer, when in reality, that Thai farmer probably has land worth more than the loud mouth farang anyway.

People like that, frankly, are best avoided.

does that mean that people "who actually have money" should not participate in Thaivisa's financial forum because that would be "vulgar" but people who do not meet the afore-mentioned criteria are welcome?

are Warren Buffet, George Soros, Bill Gross, Mohamed El-Erian and hundreds of other individuals "who actually have money" vulgar when they talk about it? coffee1.gif

Certainly not, but people that take things to extremes over the afore-mentioned and drop a few irrelevant names in the process to illustrate self-importance usually do fit the V word. Sir.

Seeing yourself as better than others, due to wealth, is pathetic,

I see myself as better than others due to education and intelligence.

More education does not necessarily mean more intelligence

Clearly sometimes it does.

The OP comes across as rather jealous.

Sucks to him !!

he probably is a "cheap Charlie" and doesn't like being called one. There are plenty of them among the so-called "long stayers" who save up a bit of money and come to Thailand because it's cheap to live here and try to stay here as long as possible, and spend as little as possible. They are too lazy to do an honest days job in their own country or elsewhere and are no benefit to the country.

C'mmon, lets bury everything right now and move forward. It does not lead us anywhere by calling names. Yes, some of us are a bit well to do and some are not but we are all friends in this forum. Lets see everyone of us at an equal level and uphold this community spirit. Any objection?

i actually got pissed off with a few stupidly rich ash holes (ones worth £40 million....that i know of) who spend all their time here crying about the cost of things while trying to make 1 chang last the whole afternoon by topping it up with ice.......which to them is expensive because its only cold water.

another 1 spent all his time slagging me off for spending 90% of what i get on toys while he sits all night in a gogo bar on 1 orange juice and doesnt leave any tips.

ive never know so many rich people here who bust a nut trying to save money all the time.

The Harry Enfield sketch is beautiful and speaks volumes about status. Quite rightly intelligence is surruptitiously praised. Mr rich and his ugly wife are proud of not being able to or willing to speak Spanish. In the end they drink pi*s literally! Here the pleasure in having an easy life through comfort in the language and one's ability is worth its weight in gold. I often say it is the most "valuable" thing I have. Those poor people insisting you dont need to speak Thai. Bless! I am indeed considerably richer than thou!

The people I know, both here and back in my hometown, who actually are wealthy, never mention it or flaunt it.

They are not Cheap Charlies, as you would call them, but just genuine, down to earth people.

Seeing yourself as better than others, due to wealth, is pathetic, and such people need to 'buy' friends, as they tend to be unable to socialise with most normal people in society.

Mentioning how much money you have makes you a target. Anyone who has money knows this and keeps this fact as secret as possible.

Anecdote time: a friend of mine does social media marketing in America. A few years ago he tried to start a business doing "reputation management" for ultra wealthy families. The business model was like this: very rich people are often publicly maligned by others who have a vendetta, want to blackmail them, or want to use them as a target for their own purposes (the Koch brothers and George Soros are great examples of this). At the same time, very rich people tend to avoid the spotlight as much as possible and are often very secretive, so they don't defend themselves online. As a result, a Google search of a rich but non-famous person or family can result in some nasty results. He wanted to offer his services cleaning up their online reputation.

He gave up after about a year. His client base was not interested in having any kind of online presence at all. Rich people are so secretive that they will endure all kinds of public criticism instead of defend themselves.

I think this is a reason why slander laws are so popular in Asia, where rich people obviously control the show.

I remember one guy who I drank with regularly was always telling about all of his money and how well off he was. ( He had a million baht and lived in a 8000 baht a month studio).

One time I was sitting with him and another guy from England who didn't have a lot, the baht millionaire told us he had more than both of us put together. I had to smile. Far from being rich, I never mentioned to him how I funded my stay in Thailand. Another friend asked me how I managed to live in Thailand without working. So I told him.

Well my baht millionaire friend no longer wanted to talk about how rich he was.

Me, I am a nobody. I see the girls shake their heads in regret as I enter their place of work, taking up a seat and never throwing ping-pong balls.

Waitresses forget my order.

Shop assistants, disturbed from their phones, do not understand my attempts at speaking Thai, shaking their heads with their mouths open.

I am one of those guys getting in your way as I stop and about face in the shops trying to find something.

All manner of vehicles will pull out in front of me forcing me to brake hard, it is like I am not there.

Thai guys will use my bike as a public bench and look at me threateningly when I return.

They will block the pavement and force me to walk in the gutter.

Bank tellers will decide to go to the toilet when it is my turn, exchange kiosk attendants will decide it is lunch time.

In the land of smiles I get none....

Even my cat turns it's backside on me and lifts it's tail as an expression of opinion.

Have you have never stayed in the Conrad?? if you think its cheap, your sadly mistaken, the upper suite floors have a Diamond rating and go between 8-15000 baht a night with many amenities and discounts - forget the websites selling them for 3-5000, those are the low end rooms with no added amentities. I have stayed there dozens of times over the years as a USG employee so get a Government rate on a decent suite on the Club floors.

As for the braggarts, I pay them no mind, haven't the time for that, those are the posters I skip.........enjoy Bangkok, and to hell with the petty posters that think they are rock stars because they pay 3 girls 500 baht each to massage him in a 5 star hotel.

I do love a touch of irony.
