Phuket Governor orders authorities on high alert for undisclosed terror threat

PHUKET: Governor Chamroen Thipyapongthada has ordered all police and military commanders on the island to be on high alert for a terror attack, and to coordinate and carry out checkpoints at and near all of the island's prime tourist zones.

Citing a "reliable news source that there is a threat of non-peaceful groups coming to Phuket to create a situation", the memo dated February 13 and signed by the Phuket Governor, also asked for all local government office heads to coordinate with the respective police, military and security chiefs to ensure that precautionary inspections are carried out, and to ensure that there are no black spots in CCTV coverage.

What 'reliable news source', what 'non-peaceful groups', and what kind of 'situation'? These days a 'terror attack' usually refers to a bombing or mass shooting by some generally acknowledged terrorist organisation. Is this article in the Phuket News just some media hype or is there is some realistic terrorist threat?

Now the news is already on Finnish newspapers.

It would be interesting to hear what the source has been. Nothing out of ordinary at least on this part of the island.

yeah, we will get right on that. cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

but seriously, (this is my serious face) it must be a big threat or I don't think they would have made this announcement.

Not good for business.

if it is domestic, they just got warned off, and if they are Foreign, they don't care. Maybe delayed.

not seeing anything on google that is recent. But Russia did warn Thailand two months ago about ISIS trying to get into Thailand.

you know, the PM has left the country. I wonder if a terror attack on the level of the Bangkok bombing is timed to make him look bad for not being here or force him to return.

Anything to do with the 3,000 odd people who walked through "immigration" a few days ago without being checked?

Could you elaborate, was not aware of that?

Cheers

would that be tuk-tuk drivers, or ladyboys? Or, even the greatest menace: tourists?

About 800 international arrivals breezed through Krabi Airport immigration on Wednesday due to a six-hour blackout that caused the computer systems to shut down.“Immigration officers had to manually take down passenger information, and later enter it in the system when it was back up and running,” confirmed Attaporn Nuangudom, director of Krabi International Airport.

The loose security measures come months after a leaked memo from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) warning that Islamic State (IS) terrorists had been dispatched to Phuket (story here).

“After checking all passengers in the system, I assure you that there was no one who posed a security threat,” Mr Attaporn said. -

The Muslims here have it too good to wreck their golden goose.

The Imam at the mosque that is on viset as you head from Sai Yuan to Chalong drives a Mercedes......

Pretty certain they prefer their brothers and sisters to make all the noise down in Yala.

Slight exaggeration and loose facts.....

Yes, apologies, it was 800, not 3,000 ... none of whom were checked by more than a quick manual frisk, no x-ray's, no immigration checks, and I can't imagine their baggage was thoroughly checked either.

Interesting, without saying anything it says a lot. Not many tourist destinations would put

out a statement like this. Internally yes but they would not make it public. whistling.gif

Are you saying that metal detectors and x-ray machines shut down in a show of solidarity when the immigration computer crashed ?

Seriously though these were arriving passengers. All checks would have been done prior to arrival except immigration checks.

Without power it would be very difficult to use x-rays. Incidentally, having arrived in Thailand scores of times I can state that neither myself nor my bags have ever been x-rayed, frisked nor searched, so I'm not sure why you consider there are normally major security checks on arrivals .

The passengers who arrived during the blackout were later imputed into the system and there were no security issues found. In Australia if there are problems of this sort, pax are checked against a hard copy of the current alerts before being allowed through. How do you know this didn't happen here?

Do you really think an ISIS terror cell lucked out and arrived at the Krabi airport just as there was a blackout? . And do you think without this amazing stoke of luck such a cell would have been detected and dealt with?

This is a concerning security alert for many of us living in Phuket and idiotic red herrings don't help with getting the correct message out.

The main electrical supply to the airport was off (they had 2 days prior warning of this), and the backup generators did not work (cos no one thought to check, you know, just in case cos the electric might go off), ergo, all electrically powered devices (such as metal detectors and x-ray machines) were not working, what's so hard to understand about that?

They were using <deleted> candles for <deleted> sake!
