What's the most Bizarre Thing-Person-Incident you ever saw in Thailand?

I saw her three different times in Bangkok, on three successive annual trips

She was attractive in her own way

She was a street karaoke singer, with a cup for donations

So I donated

She had no eyes

And where there should have been (those nice brown) eyes - there was only smooth skin, like on a baby's bum

Her likewise-blind male partner had a little music box, to accompany her singing, which was okay - but at least he had eyes - unseeing ones albeit

Have you seen her lately?

I hope she's okay these days...

Over to your good self..

Have you seen the poor fella in Bangkok with no arms or legs (there's more than one) - just a torso - as they somehow crawl - wriggle on the ground, pushing their alms bowl ahead of them with their head?

The Thai woman I was hanging with at the time told me not to give him money - because he gets money from the government - like helll he doessad.png

I gave him about 30 baht in change, and then left her alone - to pursue an alternative sucker farang thumbsup.gif

Cause she showed her true colors

And they were BLACK

A local told me these beggars are dropped off there in the morning by some sort of gang which then picks them up in the evening and takes most of the collected money.

Wow.... Too many to list. One that always stands out though is years back.... Watched an old guy calmly walk up to a young women and stab her with a long fruit knife. Took the police over 30 minutes to respond. Two of them perched on a crappie motorbike. Looked like they had no interest in what just happened......

This was actually the pivotal moment for me were I came to the realization that if anything happens to me in Thailand, I will need to find a way to take care of it myself..... No one here is going to help you.

Pattaya is much sadder without him. Now all we have are estate agents, scams and street crime.

The local market that sets up every Sunday, twisted together bare electrical cables trailing everywhere on the floor even after its been raining and there are puddles here and there. The guy on the ground pushing his bowl in front of him over the cables and through the puddles.

Guys Arc Welding wearing just sunglasses.

Fruit and other produce stacked over 15ft high on a small pick-up.........something like this.....

In a street market in Hat Yai a lady had a 'double-thumb'... she seemed to used it to her advantage when holding a pencil etc...

I was quite an odd sight up close...

I had a taxi driver a while back with two thumbs on each hand. It didn't seem to enhance his driving skills though.

In Chiang Mai 25 years ago. They had a night food court that was rather large. Food stalls around the edge and tables and chairs in the middle. On night a Big strong looking Thai man dressed like a monk, came walking up near the food stalls where people buy the food. One thai-chinese stall owner starting yelling at the guy to go away. The stall owner then picked up a club about 5 feet long and 2 inches around and starting beating the monk.as he walked forward. The beating didnot stop. The monk was bleeding from the ears and eyes and kept walking. Finally the club broke over the monks head. The stall owner went to stab him with it but stopped . The monk then turned and walked away bleeding from his eyes, ears and mouth. the monk never lifted a hand or did anything other than walk slowly towards the other man then turned and walked away..No one interfered. I felt the injuries were bad enough to kill the monk,I often wonder if he survived. i still wonder why did the monk do this? he risk his life for what I donot know.

7 or 8 years ago, there was a guy we dubbed "quick change" as he would walk by the cafe where we hung out in the afternoons doing about a 20 to 30 minute loop and each time with different clothes, boots, sunglasses and hats. Was an everyday occurrence for a couple years then he just disappeared. He was my first glimpse of oddities, alas I seem to be rather numbed anymore at the strangeness here.

How soon the exotic becomes mundane.

Oh but it also was a strange reality when I finally figured out the blind singer with helper solicited tips to move on and not play for you. Rather the opposite of the mariachi bands in Mexico whom you have to tip to play for you.

Years ago, used to do happy hour the Dynasty rail. That is a show that can entertain for 2 hours easily. My favorite was high pockets. Rather thin Western gentlemen in his late 60's or so that would walk towards Sukhumvit then back about 20 minutes latter. Always wore shorts belted about 6 inches below his nipples with mid calf white socks and sandals. Never figured out where he was going, but it was regular like clock work.

I'll share my horror story. I was on vacation in Patong in 2002. I was strolling along the beach one morning when I see all all the jetski boys converge and start beating the ever loving crap out of one old guy. I was relentless. Four guys carry a woman out who likes someone threw ashes on her. The old guy is left unconscious in a bloody ball.

Turns out the guy was a homeless, pain in the ass, drug addicted idiot. He was so incensed by the crying of one of the beach massage girl's baby, he got a glass of gasoline, threw in on the woman and lit her on fire.

She was in the hospital for months. I was part of a group that found some money to help with medical bills. When I followed up a year later, the woman had been through a horrible ordeal of skin grafts. She was doing much better but still couldn't work because it was painful to be in the sun.

The guy...who knows? Shit happens.

I was at a traffic light in Khon Kaen and a guy on a motorcycle pulled up next to me. He slipped his feet out of his flip flops while waiting for the lights to change and then roared off - leaving the flip flops behind...

It's bizarre how little Thais consider their own safetysad.png

This helmet is actually made out of compressed PAPER, for Christ's sake..

I'm putting about 5 pounds pressure on it - look how it folds like a cheap tentsad.png

A baseball hat is about as good..

And a construction hard hat better..

Only in Thailand..

Only in Thailand..

And Cambodia, Vietnam, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and every other developing country that has progressed to the point where motorcycles are affordable family transport.

TH

And progressed to the point where motorcycle helmets are not needed at all - and if they are - pressed paper-cardboard helmets will suffice just fine thumbsup.gif

Many Thais take their dead relatives off the roadway and to the hospital (like mine did), so it looks like they died at the hospital, or en route. Why?? Because many, many Thais believe if you die on a roadway, your spirit will be relegated to wander the roadways for all eternity! This arcane believe is rooted in Animism.

Only in Thailand?cheesy.gif

my inlaws eating rats

Thats the one I still cant rap my head around.

My daughter loves the bugs at market, forget the name, but the little fried worm ones are alright, taste like chic peas. Ill never touch the cockroaches though.

I dont mind frog, tastes just like chicken.

But eating rats and cockroaches?.....gahhhh!

Rats especially....for the Love of buddha....why? When everything else is so cheap/cheaper.

My in laws say its becuase the rats eat the cows...well that doesnt mean you have to deep fry them?????

Its a curious thing, becuase my wife and her mother wont touch them, thai mother in law pulls the same face I do...yuck!

Anything dish that looks suspicious, always ask the wife - Mai Nu?

This thread is amusing. It made me think of one more....

About 6 years ago I was on the BTS, gorgeous girl sitting across from me. I mean, really gorgeous. Looked her up and down (could not help it) and she had 6 toes on each foot. Still gorgeous though!
