Now I have your attention. Is there much difference between spirits bought at, say, Big C than duty free at Suvarnabhumi? Wondering whether to buy now or later. TV input needed, alcoholics advice welcome. ;)

I'm an alcoholic and my advice is that if you're drinking so much that the price is a big concern you might want to give it up...

I actually don't drink, it's a present for someone. I was in Big C and checking the prices for a 1l bottle of Johnny Walker and it was about 1700B for a bottle of Black Label. So was curious to know the savings if I waited until the airport. Edited by farang1979

I would buy it at the airport, saves you carrying it anyway and won't cost more there i guess. If you fly over Dubai then buy it there.

I have a stopover in Dubai. Is it cheaper there? I would have thought it'd be more expensive...

Definitely cheaper in Dubai, one of the best duty free airports in the world (DXB).

Just out of curiosity, how were you planning to get a 1L bottle of liquor onto a plane if you purchased it at Big C? Pack it in your checked luggage? blink.png

I think you answered your own question haha.

Even better, I answered my own question with another question.

If you buy it in BKK and have a stopover in Dubai you probably loose the bottle i guess.

Buy it in Dubai and pay with creditcard (or cash if you like). Also buy a carton of Gauloise Blondes cigarettes for your friends, costs you around 10 euro and will make them very happy i guess. Only the Gauloise cigarettes are very cheap there, no idea why that is but they are french ciggies.

Dubai has great taxfree shops, they are the cheapest i've ever seen. But have a look around because they have many more old good whiskey's, you might go for another one like Black Jack or so, they have many Jack Daniels which i had never seen before.

Yes thank you. You're right it's a good point. I think you can buy duty free AND take onboard only when the next stop is your final stop. So if I bought in BKK I'd lose it in Dubai if continuing onto UK. Yes was thinking of buying cigarettes too for my smoker friends as cigarettes are about 400B in the UK so if they want they can have some. Maybe France has some sort of trade deal with the UAE. Yes, I think Dubai will have a large selection of whiskys so maybe I will change my choice after all. I think I will pay cash, I will probably need to get some dirhams unless they take other currencies?

Yes you 'll have to change at the moneychangers there first that's why i use creditcard while shopping there, in the past they let me pay with any currency but that's changed i thought. Sometimes there's a long qeueu for them.

For me personally i would be more happy with a special Jack Daniels but they have so much more in Dubai, much better then Thailand, also cheaper and they speak good english.

Don't know if your UK friends like French cigarettes but they are much cheaper then the rest and good quality.

Last week at Swampy airport i was in their taxfreeshop for cigarettes, they couldn't speak a word english but worst of all the computer had crashed and i had to wait 15 minutes before it was fixed. Thailand only 555555

And if your friends in the UK enjoy Cuban cigars then DXB is a massive savings over UK prices on cigars. Nice selection too.

Yup and also many funny things for sale which you are supposed to smoke. I have no idea what they are and can't buy them because i always have the max. limit of cigarettes with me.

Dubai taxfree is great for shopping and having a break during a long flight. They need more smokinglounges though since they 're always loaded.

Good to know! As it happens I may actually need some. Thanks for the tip.

Haha. That's could only happen in Thailand! Expect anything. Not speaking English is surprising especially at the airport. Hope you got your cigarettes 555

Thanks pal! That's even cheaper. Would buy at Swampy but have got a connecting flight at Dubai. I've read that you can only take carry on if the next destination is your final destination.
