PATTAYA:-- Shots were fired in downtown South Pattaya as a lone thief made off with a big cash haul in a daring daylight bank robbery on Wednesday afternoon.

As two Samco staff members were loading cash from an SCB mini branch outside the department store a Thai man on a motorcycle stopped a few metres away.

He fired once in the air, grabbed cash bags containing 8.8 million baht then shot at the back of the money van before making a getaway towards Sukhumvit Road.

Samco - Siam Administrative Management Co Ltd - was hit earlier last month in Chonburi town.

Police who rushed to the scene found Samco guards Methakorn Suphadee, 26, and Jirasak Silatlao,28, in a state of shock. Methakorn said that they had come to collect cash at the end of the trading day from the bank to take to central Pattaya when a tall and thin Thai man on a white Yamaha Fino stopped ten metres away.

He was wearing a red helmet, long sleeved black and light blue sports shirt, green jacket, blue trousers and with a white mask over his mouth. He fired a 9mm pistol in the air, grabbed the bags then fired again.

Police found a hole in the back of the van and two spent cartridges at the scene. CCTV was not working in front of the department store but an image of the man fleeing was obtained at the Sukhumvit exit as the man fled towards Chonburi.

We've all seen these guys loading or unloading money from shops, banks, atms etc.......always looking casual, chance for a smoke out of the van....chatting away......and now it's becoming obvious just how simple they are to rob.....single motorcyclists with a gun!

I was wondering how long it would take for the crooks to figure this no-brainer out....They need to seriously think about how to improve security around these rolling cash treasure chests....On the other hand it is getting very difficult nowadays to get away with anything due to all CCTV installed everywhere.

And another thing....why is it so difficult for the people who transport money to figure out a way to record the serial number of every single bill they are transporting? It should be by 2016 easy to have a machine that counts and records the serial numbers at the same time? And what about the ink thing, they don't have that in Thailand?

CCVT cameras not working in the area (by design?) - No cameras on the delivery vehicle? - No armed employees and/or security escorts? - No exploding ink packs in the money? - No embedded GPS locators in the money bags?

Begs to be questioned!

Good point on the note reader... If they were to have a device that read the serial number of every note in supermarkets, banks, gas stations, etc., linked to a central database the could detect stolen and forged note very quickly, may be time to put QR or barcodes on bank notes.

They sure made this robbery sound easy.

You would think that for 8.8 M Baht there is a lot of planning involved. But all he had to do was drive up behind the money truck, fire a couple of shots in the air, and then drive away with the money bags. With his helmet and surgical mask, and as long as he removed his license plate, I doubt they will catch him either.

This sure beats trying to pull an ATM Machine from the wall socket and driving that behind you down the street and all this time having the ATM Camera Record all this. Probably a lot more money this way also.

They never learn from past mistakes do they?........

That's absolutely correct.

Ever taken a look at the KBank Naklua cash distribution/ loading operation every morning into some twenty pickup trucks.

For sometime now ever since they took some of the already inadequate KBank car parking spaces to increase the money distribution/loading area I have been wondering when it is going to be hit, of course that one will take more than one guy by himself on a motorcycle. This one will be AL Capone Chicago style with machine guns blasting and a lot of innocent people being hit by stray bullets.

That operation for example should have been located in say Tesco Lotus North vehicle parking area in one of the back corners of that lot so it can be controlled. But no the brains (an you know were they come from on a 10-year management advisory contract) put it in the wide open spaces with lots of people walking around on Sukhumvit Rd. Oh well, one good thing, it is practically next door to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, so the wounded do not have to be dragged too far for medical attention.

Stopped his bike, shot in the air, grabbed the bags and off he went.

That does sound particularly easy.......

Samco does not sound like an outfit to use and looking at ex-staff might be a starting point.

Hell, why mug people when bags of money are easy pickings.

I said last week after the 10 million baht robbery how easy it is here in Thailand and if it was in the uk the banks would of gone under years ago.the security is pathetic.they just hand over the cash because it's not theirs.if you stuck a gun in the guards face and told him to hand over his wallet he would put up one hell of a fight.its not my money so I don't give two hoots.

8.8 million baht, how much would that weigh and how bulky would it be? seems a lot for one person to be capable of carrying in a safe & responsible manner while in control of a motorcycle!

Considering the amount of money taken and the amount of robberies there have been recently,You dont think this is just a 'one man and a gun thing do you? I think there are some pretty powerful people involved in all this.I find it hard to believe that a guy can get away with 8.8 million and not having to share it with some one/others.It was very interesting what the op said."don't they have the ink thing here" I would not be surprised if there was 'inside' information here.

This is the second robbery in 2 weeks, first 10 million and now 8.8 million. Probably the same guys, next time they should carry guns and return fire .
