BANGKOK: -- Even for the most restricted of budgets, renting an apartment in Bangkok can be pretty inexpensive, especially when compared to other global capitals.

But even for Bangkok, this is cheap.

The Euro Grande Hotel, found on Sukhumvit 31 and just a 10-minute stroll from Phrom Phong BTS, is advertising 24 square metre apartments for just ‎฿199 (US$5.70) a day.

There’s just one catch…

According to the huge sheets advertising this “shock deal”, you need to sign up for ten years in order to get this incredibly low price; which means a lump sum of ‎฿715,000 (US$20,400) net.

Another sign shows another deal also offered: 3 years for ‎฿299 (US$8.50) a day, for a total of ‎฿327,500 (US$9,400) net.

I know the joint, it's nothing but an attention grabbing stunt... there are so many things that can and will go wrong with such

offerings, that not even a complete fool will fall for such stupid deal, as I'm sure that the B.199 will not include

any amenities or services with this amount......

It seems that without knowing anything at all you assert that you know a lot about this.

Of course it's an attention grabbing stunt, the sole idea of such a stunt is to grab attention! What's wrong with that?

Apart from a visa situation that is not the responsibility of the owners, what are the "so many things that can and will go wrong" ?

Your insight is amazing when you suggest that services will not be included, what rental (that is not a serviced apartment) does include services? None, of course.

Nothing special. I pay a bit less than that for my apartment in Pattaya, and I pay by the month. It works out at about 165 baht a night, with all mod cons, nice windows and balcony, power shower, kitchen, king size bed, 32 sq. m. But for Bangkok, 199 baht a night is a fairly good deal. However, you can do better. My ex-girlfriend was living in a very nice small apartment in Bangna and paying 2,500 baht a month. These prices are not generally available to falangs. TBH, I could afford to pay 50,000 baht a month, but I prefer to save my money.

Well, if someone took the 3 year deal at 299b per day, that works out to about 9000b per month for a 24 sq mt. unit.

That's not outrageously inexpensive, even for BKK. We rent an 80 sq mt two bedroom, two bath apartment in the heart of BKK for 15K per month, just rent, not including utilities. It did take some work to find, though, and we have been happily in the same place for years.

There's also a small hotel on my soi that has signs up advertising their rooms for 399b per night, and that's on a per night basis, no long term commitment. And it's a regular small, recently refurbished hotel -- not a sleazy short-time place or anything like that. Don't know the size, but guessing, couldn't be any smaller than the 24 sq mt one in the OP.

16-20 sm is pretty standard for the higher priced areas, if you want to stay under 1000 per night. Agoda gives all the room sizes. 24 is about median for newly constructed studios on the BTS... That studio would run about 1.5+ to buy.

Thais, including the management of this hotel, do not understand the present value of money.

I rather pay the daily rate of Bt199 every day for ten years then to pay that initial lump sum of Bt715k.

EX- girlfriend, balcony.... if you have 'company' over some evening, be careful you don't 'fall' off your balcony.

They seem to understand the present value of money just fine. They'll happily take your 715,000 baht and also from many other people (if they can), and then probably shut down the hotel and do a runner to another country...

If you could buy it, 715,000 baht would get you about 2 square meters in that location.

3 square meters if you got a very good deal.

2 sq. m. is more than enough for me. I'm slightly less than 2 metres tall and I don't own much stuff, only a few clothes that would fit in 2 backpacks. I would happily live in a 2 sq. m. space if I could rent it for less than 50 baht a night. As I said earlier, I pay about 165 baht a night now for my too spacious (32 sq. m.) apartment in Pattaya. If I could downsize my expenses, I'd jump at the opportunity. I don't need to do that because I'm reasonably wealthy and have multiple retirement incomes, but I like to save money. My dream would be living in Thailand on less than 150 baht a day. As it stands, I spend 80-100 baht a day on food at present. It would be awesome to pay only 50 baht a day in rent.

6000 / month isn't that unusual if it's just a small room in an old building.

You can even get that price near Siam: between MBK and rama 6 tollway, on the rong muang soi streets. 5-7K a month.

Clever marketing for this guy to have made it into the news.

I am just like you. I actually live under the Nana BTS staircase. Yes, I am the bearded farang in the shirt with matching holes in the front and the back and the shorts with no buttons so my dick sometimes falls out in the open but I quickly tuck it back in soon as I feel the breeze.

But what the fools who walk fast to get past me don't know is that I used to be one of the biggest rock stars on the planet, someone they probably paid a 100 bucks to go see play.

I used to stay the summer in my place in LA next to the Clooneys and then winter in Marbella. But guess what? I got tired of being rich and shallow and being hounded 24/7 by the press and fans.

So I sold off putting my tens of millions in safekeeping in Panama and moved here under the bridge. And I tell you I love it. Give me the simple life any day.

Congratulations to you. I'm genuinely happy for you that you're living the free and easy lifestyle you prefer. I enjoy my home comforts and king-size bed, so your lifestyle is a bit too "out there" for my tastes, but you're a wise man to keep it all stashed in the bank. For myself, I'm just focused on reducing my monthly spend below 10,000 baht. Right now, it's at roughly 15,000 baht and I still live much better than I was ever living in the UK.
