Thailand aims to show responsibility by running for non-permanent UN Security Council seat

BANGKOK, 3 May 2016 (NNT) - Thai Ambassador to the United Nations Virachai Plasai said Thailand has aimed to show responsibility to the world community by running as candidate for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.

Mr. Virachai said Thailand has a great potential to maintain global peace and security since this country could act as a good and flexible coordinator and could negotiate with all sides, including the permanent member countries in the U.N. Security Council (P5).

Besides, he said, Thailand plays an independent and constructive role in pursuing its foreign policy and has joined more than 20 peace-keeping missions.

He affirmed that internal politics wouldn't obstruct Thailand's possibility to be a non-permanent member in the U.N. Security Council. Moreover, Thailand, as an ASEAN member state, has played a leading role in the Southeast Asian region.

Fantastic they can coordinate and delve deeply into complicated world affairs.

Would be even better if they could utilise these facilities to protect Thais & Tourists in their own country before starting elsewhere.

Just saying ........

Thailand has joined "more than 20 peace keeping missions".

The UN reimburses the countries contributing troops at a flat rate of US$ 1332 per soldier per month. The soldiers continue to be paid at their national pay rates.

Since I am sure that no one in the Thai Army earns ThB467204 a month, that represents a considerable surplus amount of cash. I wonder where it goes?

The UN is a veritable money spigot for some countries. Peacekeepers form countries not that far away from Thailand served in Former Yugoslavia. They were about as much use as a chocolate teapot. But at US$1332 per soldier per month they represented a jolly good earner....
