Thailand still swelteringly hot, rainy season could be delayed

BANGKOK: -- The past couple of weeks have seen some seriously scorching temperatures in Thailand, with parts of the country seeing the mercury hit well over 40° Celsius.

It doesn’t look like there’ll be a let-up any time soon either; temperatures across the Kingdom are expected to hover around the late 30s and even hit 40°C in the next few days, according to the Thai Meteorological Department.

The long-awaited rainy season may well be delayed, according to experts, as there is so little moisture in the air at the moment that it’s stopping the formation of rain clouds, reports The Nation.

“Judging from the weather-pattern stimulator, we can see that Thailand will get more rain after mid-May, but I’m concerned that the weather in Thailand will still be too hot and dry for clouds to form and create rain,” said Wattana Kanbua, senior meteorologist and director of the Marine Meteorological Centre.

“The situation will be like last year when the winds came on time, but the weather was too hot and arid for rain to form. That is why we need more trees to trap the moisture and keep the weather cool,” he commented.

It has been reported that Thailand has just placed an order for ten mature forests from Myanmar. whistling.gif

Wasn't it just last week he made the "statement" that Thailand would be ok because THE RAINS WOULD COME THE SECOND WEEK OF May?

There were 2 separate articles last week about the rainy season coming nearly as well as reports not to panic because there is enough drinking water to last until the end of May or June.

As most TV members called foul to those reports being faked to pacify the people from hoarding water. It seems now they forgot what they told everyone.

i hope somewhere during one of these committees someone raised their hand and said "What if it does not rain again this year?"

He did, foolish lad. He's now riding a 10 year old Honda Wave, tasked with calibrating rain gauges in Sakon Nakhon.

How difficult is it to get some drones seeding clouds with Iodine.?

It's cheap

It works

it's eco-friendly

And you have rain on demand.

Rain is a political choice.

End of story

I just did a Google search on "drones seeding clouds" and I see this is cutting edge stuff being tested by my home state of California.

That means at least 50 more years before a Thai "scientist" "invents" it.

Thais are really good at using drones with Go Pro cameras to take selfies.

I see it all the time down here in Hua Hin.

Purple rain? Are you a Prince fan?

One day they announce the big pour is right behind the next cloud the next day they say it is somewhere out there in the atmosphere.

It will take a while before I gain any confidence in Thai science.

Surely, there must be a mistake!

Last week the WEATHER CHIEF personally announced, the rainy season would be coming soon!

Mid of May!

...if Thai-people are so afraid of loosing face...maybe they shouldn't talk so much cra@p. all the time!

It only work when there is enough moisture available to form rain. They have been seeding clouds inbThailand for many years but without enough moisture you can not make rain. Rain is not a political choice but a natural blessing.

IN DROUGHT-STRICKEN CENTRAL ISAAN....

At work, there are two urinals in the men's restroom which have had water running full-blast since early February. Obviously the valves are broken or stuck open. No way for a layman like me to turn them off. After reporting it three times to maintenance, I gave up. I doubt they've even been checked.

Nobody will really care until literally the last drop is consumed. Hoping for a decent rainy season to avoid that stark scenario.

80km north-east of Udon we've had 2 excellent downpours the past week.the deforestation problem is a chronic one, it certainly existed the year of the great flood. I thought the mmonsoon rains actually formed as clouds over the sea and ocean before sweeping inland .

Someone raised their hand, and was promptly sent to an AA facility for a 'waterboarding' session.

Yet up here in bone dry rural Khampaeng Phet we have just has a thunderstorm and about 20 minutes rain.

Yes the TMD DID forecast around a 10% chance of precipitation so they do get it right sometimes.

I don't know. Most of these stories are very vague about just who is making the strange statements they quote. I hadn't heard before of a "Marine Meteorological Centre." I once went on a visit to the "Thai Meteorological Department" and they seemed to be a professional organization. I hadn't heard before of the atmosphere being to hot and dry to form clouds. When the Southwest Monsoon starts in May the winds blowing over the Indian Ocean are supposed to pick up moisture there and carry it over the Asian Mainland. I wonder what happens to the moisture if it doesn't condense out over Thailand. I would think an important factor would be whether or not the El Nino event has subsided. If this guy is the one who's been getting quoted in all the stories over the last couple of years it's just a waste of time reading them.

“Judging from the weather-pattern stimulator (sic), we can see that Thailand will get more rain after mid-May, but I’m concerned that the weather in Thailand will still be too hot and dry for clouds to form and create rain,” This sentence doesn't make sense. The simulator says there will be rain, but it also shows it will be too hot for rain?

Yes you're right..These weather experts quickly cover up their previous predictions with another expert prediction....I want a job as a weather man...steady salary and my guess is as good as anyones..I just need to make up some nonsense to back up my words.

The statement is just nonsense. If he's talking about a computer simulation, the results will depend on the data you enter. If you enter the correct temperature and humidity, and if the simulation has produced reliable results before, then you should trust the result. If you're entering your guess of what the temperature and humidity will be at some future time, you are going to get results that are as reliable as your guess. If you think your guess is better than the computer simulation, why even run the program at all?

Heavy rainstorms today and yesterday here in Southern Sisaket. Foolish to make a Thailand-wide prognostications!
