Stonewall Inn, Greenwich Village, New York City -- where gay resistance to police oppression sparked the U.S. gay civil rights movement in 1969 and the first Gay Pride parade. Now even today Gay Pride Parades and events are politically significant in many nations all over the world.

WASHINGTON (AP) — New York's iconic Stonewall Inn, where the modern gay rights movement took root, will become the first national monument honoring the history of gays and lesbians in the U.S. under a proposal President Barack Obama is preparing to approve.

No don't do it. I went there like 10 years ago it is still in operation it wouldn't qualify as a monument. Maybe a footnote on the sidewalk is more appropriate,

It's the symbolic value of the place - first time gay people stood up for their rights. Yes, it is a goods thing that the Stonewall Inn has become an official monument, as it has been an icon for decades.

"I believe our national parks should reflect the full story of our country: the richness and diversity and uniquely American spirit that has always defined us," Obama said. "That we are stronger together, that out of many, we are one."

To herald the designation, a White House video with photos of the monument was to be played at noon Saturday on the billboards in Times Square just as New York's annual pride celebration is getting under way, the White House said. The declaration also comes as advocates celebrate the one-year anniversary on Sunday of the Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage nationwide.

Point taken but how many bars or businesses that are still operating have been made monuments? Seems like a grey area here to me. Would love to be the bar owner though.
