Three districts in Lampang declared emergency disaster zone

LAMPANG: -- Three districts of Lampang province covering altogether 109 villages have been declared emergency disaster zone as a result of acute drought problem.

The three drought-stricken districts are Wang Nua, Thoen and Jahom. Altogether 9,327 households with over 38,000 people have been affected.

Lampang governor Mr Samart Loyfah however assured that the remaining water left in the two reservoirs, Kiew Khor Ma in Jaehom district and Kiew Lom in Muang district, is sufficient for tap water production to last until July when drought situation is expected to ease considerably.

Meanwhile in Narathiwat province, peat forest fires in Yee Ngor district are still raging today and also expanding due to strong winds.

Ten fire trucks have been deployed to control the fires with the help of about 200 men from the Navy, the district’s defence volunteer unit and tambon administration organization.

Governor Sitthichai Sakda disclosed today that forest fires were reported in nine locations in five districts of Narathiwat. He claimed that officials were able to control the fires from spreading but water is still needed to be pumped into peat forests where underground fires are still simmering.

The provincial health office has prepared about 100,000 face masks to be sent to hospitals in the affected districts for distribution to members of the public.
