I got my licences (first 1 year then the 5 year) at the Transport Dept, Pattaya, and the licence has my permanent address in Pattaya on it. However, I have had a small problem getting my licence because of difficulty in passing the colour blindness test. I have managed to pass, but with some help, which I won't go into here. My partner tells me that I can get my 5 year licence renewed in Yasothon (Isaan) where she says it will be far easier to renew. Can I renew my licence in another province?

Perhaps things have changed. My 5 year license was issued in Prachuap Khirikhan many years ago. Renewed in Phayao 2009, no problems. Last renewed in Bang Saphan 2014. No problems

What did you do about the residence letter? If you were actually living in Bang Saphan I guess it wouldn't present a problem, but I will still be resident in Pattaya, not Yasothon.

At that time, in the town of Phayao they looked at my expiring 5 year license and looked at my wife's house registration Bang Saphan [Prachuap Khirikhan] and my doctor certificate [alive] Sent me upstairs for eye and brake check. Than one hour video in Thai language, than downstairs for license picture. Thirty minutes later walked out with new 5 year license. Have they changed the rules, that I do not know. According to wife that is still the way it is done.

Suggest going to nearest place that licenses are issued and ask. That way you will know for sure what is allowed.

Have never been asked for Residence Letter

You can renew your licence in any Province, but a small fee is charged if it's not your home Province.

Regardless of Province though you will be required to take the usual tests again, including the Colour Blindness.

What's makes your wife think Yasothon is any different?

Driving licence renewal is national not provincial. Faz is correct in that you have to view video's etc if in a different province and fees seem to vary just a little.

I can't tell you that, it may breach forum rules.
