GLO to announce one-year achievements

BANGKOK, 26 May 2016 (NNT) - The Government Lottery Office (GLO) is set to announce its achievements over the past year, highlighting its success in keeping the price of a lottery ticket at 80 baht.

According to GLO President Col Apirat Kongsompong, the office will also report on the progress that was made through its ticket-booking program, which has been implemented 16 times since last year.

The program was designed to provide lottery vendors with greater access to tickets. Before the program, many were forced to buy tickets from middlemen, who would mark up the price and eat into the profits of principal vendors.

Mr. Apirat said it was also Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha’s wish to address this issue, which has gone unresolved for more than 40 years. Gen Prayut resorted to using his authority under Section 44 of the interim constitution and appointing a working team outside of the GLO to tackle this problem.

Good to see that the government has its management priorities right with gambling in lotteries up there at the top. In the meantime neighbouring countries like Vietnam seem to concentrate more in attracting foreign investment.

Vietnam has just announced it has attracted over US$10 billion in foreign investment in the period January to May. Up 136% over the previous year.

I am guessing that Thailand might have had a slice of that action if it was not for the insecurity that comes with the present military rule (soon to end we are assured) coupled with the low productivity of Thai workers which has often been discussed in earlier forums.

What a great achievement- no wonder the reform of the police, armed forces and judiciary will have to wait!

Highlighted their success in keeping the lottery ticket price at Bt80 but also saying its only because of the authoritarian Section 44 usage by the PM. Pretty easy to achieve success with such a heavy handed method.

Yes, when all is said and done, and a large statue of the PM is erected in place of the Victory Monument, the school children shall come and gaze at his stern visage.

And at the base shall be a bronze plaque, inscribed with the following (translated):

"He cut out the middlemen".

I think it is more likely his statue will be erected in the place of Democracy monument.

The thing is Vietnam is very much a forward looking country. They welcome investment and are happy to learn skills from foreign workers who go their to work. Is short, Vietnam realises it lacks abilities in certain areas but has no hesitation in using skills from overseas to learn from. Thailand wont adopt that attitude. There are many clever workers in Thailand but they do not have the advantage of experience to help them progress which Vietnam does.

Unless Thailand starts to open its door to foreign workers and makes it easier for companies they will soon be just getting off the starting blocks with the Vietnamese at the finish line.
