Probe into sidewalk vendors extortion ordered

BANGKOK: -- Metropolitan police are now probing into allegations that some police officers were collecting protection money from migrant workers selling food and drinks on sidewalks.

The probe was ordered after for migrant workers comprising Myanmar, Laotian and Indian nationals were arrested by authorities for illegal trading on sidewalks.

But the foreign vendors said they were permitted to sell on sidewalks and showed authorities stickers which they said they were given after paying monthly fees to gain permits to trade.

They said uniformed authorities just told them to show the stickers if officials came to make arrest for sidewalk trade.

The four migrant workers said they had three types of stickers which showed they had paid three agencies to get permits to have free trade on sidewalks.

In total they paid about 1,300 baht a month to these officials.

But Metropolitan Police II commander Pol Maj Gen Charoen Srisasalak, meanwhile, insisted that officials who collected protection fee from these migrant are not police.

They might be bogus police or extortionists, he said and added the police were looking through video cameras to find them out for legal punishment.

Labour Department chief Arluck Promanee said authorities would look into legal channel whether it was possible to register sidewalk vendors to prevent foreign workers from doing the job same as registering motorcycle taxies.

Corrupt police allegedly selling Doraemon stickers as police protection
By Coconuts Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- Corrupt police may be selling Doraemon stickers to foreign vendors as street protection, according the Bangkok Post.

Vendors pushing fruit, ice cream and other carts featuring sticker images of Japanese manga cartoon character Doraemon may have purchased insurance from corrupt officers. The “insurance” allows them to sell and know they will not be arrested for either illegal vending nor their illegal status in the country.

Authorities call them "suai stickers" and believe they are a recent criminal tool. With this new intelligence, they’re cracking down on illegal foreign street vendors and investigating the possible practice of corrupt officers using the stickers to protect the illegal vendors in exchange for bribe money.

A probe a day keeps corruption at bay.

Not.

Despite everyone in Thailand knowing and accepting that the police are corrupt, this guy insists they're not corrupt and that the policemen demanding protection money aren't really policemen.

Difficult to take him seriously really... he's either delusional or he thinks everyone else is stupid. Take yer pick.

It's so obvious and apparent what goes on.... It's not even hidden from the public...

The denials and lies are juvenile and tiresome - Its like reading about children at times...

Anyone trying to solve any of Thailand's corruption issues are simply beaten into submission through sheer exasperation....

An old and well known story. A girl I knew had one of those

late night bars that used to spring up on Sukumvit. She told me

that she paid money directly to the police in order to run

her bar there. So I assumed this is a widespread practice.

Surprised to see a " crackdown" on this practice.......

Oh for a government of any hue or inclination, that will have balls big enough to fix the police and the armed forces. They are both a huge millstone around the neck of ordinary Thais. They've both been afforded protection for far, far too long. Knock it all down and start again, starting with Education, Law, Justice and Defence. Do that now and in 2 generations, 'Thainess' as it is today will just be a very bad memory. If they start now. But we all know they're just not serious about being a modern nation. Not at all.

My Thai language is very poor: is probe a synonym for cover-up, denial, caught red-handed...or am I off the mark?

I think your understanding of Thai language (translated of course) is spot on...:)

then perhaps the REAL police can explain why the illegal food stands, pan handlers, extortion taxi's etc etc are all parked on the streets such as Sukhumvit 11???

It's so bad you can't walk on the sidewalks of even get down the road on a motorcycle in a reasonable amount of time.

Someone is getting paid to let them all operate there. You are the police in charge of keeping the streets clear so what is your excuse for these people being there?

If they are not paying you then why don't you move them all so that the rest of us can walk on the sidewalks and drive on clearer streets?

its a fact that not just the street vendors pay, any businesses that have foreign workers pay "protection money" so police will leave the workers alone when going or getting off from work. Not only that, the police will inform businesses if higher ups are carrying checks in certain districts. Its a way of life, if you don't pay you can't play.

Sidewalk vendors, ok sorry but where I live it's the shops that have not only taken up the foot path, but extended out onto the road!!! I'm not taking the piss, I'm serious, they have racks of clothes and mannequin's what ever a meter or more out on the road directly opposite the little air-conditioned police box, the road is continuously a problem as it is off a major intersection.

A few years ago I was having a good 'Political Chat' with a Thai Taxi driver... He pointed out that it will take at least 3 generations to fix the issues, I pretty much agreed....

The real issue of course is that with each new generation it may still take a further 3 generations to fix the issues !!!

Yes the Doraemon stickers and the ones in the OP are red herrings to throw investigators off the trail.

A rare glimpse of the real stickers.......here

real police are involved lol .

i watched them do it in silom, they parked up in police car & had clipboard out marking off myanmar stall owners/workrs on silom who pay the protection fee .

much same as plain clothed cops who take protection so you get reduced hassle for selling hooky branded goods, some of them are real nasty ... surprised lot of these bad cops don't end up dead ! locals seem very tolerent of being shafted by bad cops ! odd really when will stab you to bits over minor quarrel !

The police r the ones making the extortion. I have a retail shop and I see police coming every now n then to extort money from the neighbouring shops selling fake football jerseys and fake branded goods all the time claiming that this area is under their protection.

But once the real copyright police comes down, these policeman can't protect these shop vendors at all and even worse still they be back next month to collect their monthly fee.
