Garbiñe Muguruza beats Serena Williams to win the French Open

Garbiñe Muguruza claimed her first grand slam title with a convincing win over Serena Williams at the French Open in Paris.

Williams was looking for her 22nd grand slam singles title, to equal Steffi Graff’s tally. But the American had no response to Muguruza’s aggressive game.

The Spaniard broke the World No1 three times on her way to a famous 7-5, 6-4 win.

The world No4 is the first Spaniard to lift the Suzanne Lengen trophy since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in 1998.

Muguruza’s win will make up for last year’s Wimbledon final, which she lost to Williams 6-4 6-4.

“I can’t explain with words what this title means to me,” said the Spaniard after lifting the trophy.

“You work all your life to get here. I want to congratulate Serena, because she is one of the best players. I want to thank my group, my family.

“I’ve grown up playing on clay, so for me and Spain this is just amazing. Hopefully next year we’ll be back.”
