As well as those in the photo there is also Roast Potatoes and Chunky Oven Chips

Wot, no Lobster... tongue.png

Lobster is not a common food in the UK where Tesco HQ is based.

I'm sure they've gone with some of their best sellers to start with ....

Cod fish fingers

Cod steaks in beer batter

Aberdeen Angus burgers

Petite pois

Potatoes roasted in Goose fat

Chunky oven chips

BTW my forum name is not related to what I eat wink.png

Thanks, I hope this proves popular & leads to a wider selection of goods being available.

Pretty bad selection of stuff generally, some shelves pretty low or no stock today.... the import selection is really bad...

Big C has now become my first shop of choice, since their improvements and new owners.

Even Brit style Indian curries in the freezer section, which are not bad!

It's a shame M&S over here don't sell some of their ready meal range. Far superior to Tesco's.

I'm a big fan of M&S Food but must have missed the M&S store on Samui, perhaps you can let us know where it is? or maybe just another irrelevant post (given this is a Samui forum) ?

Tops sell Waitrose food and the cod fish fingers and in batter are cheaper then the Tesco Finest but I haven't compared the two.

Thanks to TheLobster for sharing the information.wai.gif Did try to buy the Tesco frozen the Aberdeen Angus – that in my Danish home country is famous hi-quality steak meat – and serve a European style dish, mostly Danish (soft freight onions and double cream sauce), together with the Tesco frozen oven-baked potatoes, for my Thai family and friend; it was a great success and the liked the meat, wish to have it served again.smile.png

The other day I bought superior minced Black Angus from Australia, but that was not successful at all – too little fat in the meat, i.e. no fat – the Tesco-burgers had quite some fat, that disappear when fried, but gives better taste...whistling.gif

Actually the Brit oven chips are not a bad price, compared to the regular chips, bought some today, but not tried yet.

But it will probably take them months before things get restocked, if ever, once they sell out! facepalm.gif

khunPer I have tried the burgers as well (on their own) but with onions and cream I'm sure they were nice, I would also try mushrooms and cream. I think better with mashed potatoes or the chips though?

I know what you mean SamuiJimmy but I'd like to see them sell out quite quickly as it may encourage Tesco to put a bigger range on. That's my theory anyway .........

Parsnips as a dessert? bah.giflaugh.png

I guess they are trying to keep up with Big C's selection these days! ...

Tesco have added some frozen desserts and Roast Parsnips to the range ... Samui Jimmy and!

I'm aware and have tried quite a lot of Big C's 'farang' range, for frozen food there is the Casino brand, and sometimes some curries which aren't bad but you can get about the same from Big Joe's for half the price. There are also some frozen desserts which I haven't tried based on my experience of the other frozen food.

There is a big 'farang' cheese and cooked meat selection in Big C where I would recommend the vintage cheddar or and may buy some Chiroso for cooking.

The chocolate and crisps section which occupies one aisle has little of interest, same as most of the the other ambient food isles. Sometimes I will buy Olive oil or Sunflower oil but I don't see much else of interest unless you want to buy some special sauce. Pasta etc. you can buy anywhere and the range of cooking sauces is limited.

IMO!

I believe that it has been shown that the best way to make chips is by cooking them 2 or 3 times so frozen chips makes a lot of sense...

I do want to say though that the Tesco's Parsnips are amazing, as good as I could cook myself, except that I like to roast Parsnips in Sesame seed oil and then coat in a little honey at the end.

Apples and oranges unless you think that frozen chips are as good. If not then you need to peel a spud, chip, rinse and pat dry then cook them. Fair enough if someone doesn't know how to peel a spud but otherwise it is like buying frozen toast which you just have to put in your toaster to defrost.

Went there this morning, freezers on one side all empty, I think it broke down, not much of the above.

Wrong, I am sorry , they had them in the front freezers.

Depends what potatoes you are using as well wink.png

But .... the best way to cook chips is by cooking more than once. Look it up.

I'm well aware of the method and the reasoning behind it. You need to break the starch bonds on the outside to give them a greater surface area and you also need to extract as much moisture as you can. The spuds you find here are low moisture from the get go and are akin to Yukon Gold (north America), Red Rooster (Ireland), King Edward (UK) and spuds from Egypt and Cyprus. Get the fat up to around 225-230 and then turn it down to 180 before plunging in the chips. It disassociates the starch crystals in exactly the same way that blast freezing does.

You can do them in one hit but blanching them first will get a better result. You can still get a equal or better result with the single hit rather than pay someone else to chip a spud for you.

Burgers etc. still there – but not so many Aberdeen Angus left – but they are moved to a new freezer, in the brand new "Tesco Finest" boutique next to the liqueur-store, together with a lot of other "Tesco Finest" delicatessen products...
